Is this amp good Autotek MM 4000.1D for Running 2 15" BTL's?

I want to know if Autotek really gives out the power it states at 1 ohm and i have a E39 with a stock battery which i will be getting changed and my alternator is 120 amp . How much will the alternator cost because i dont think it is good to run 4000RMS at a 120amp Alternator , is it if i have a good battery ?

I want good lows and highs and want to compete in SPL Comps in future so how many hertz should be the box and im going ported. ?

Last Question is that i have 4 Bose Stock Speakers , i was thinking of buying two Alpine speaker pairs each 100 RMS , will it be enough power to hook the Speakers to the headunit and still get enough sound with that much bass ? Pioneer PH-4900 Headunit .Is this amp good Autotek MM 4000.1D for Running 2 15%26quot; BTL%26039;s?
what r the 15%26quot; BTL's rated for with 15's you will find that they can handle alot but they don't need that much watts to get that deep clean bass sound we are always lookin for hit me up and i'll try to help if i can't find it none can manger of a radio shack in Fla. so i can find the answers you need!!!, JonIs this amp good Autotek MM 4000.1D for Running 2 15%26quot; BTL%26039;s?
yea nice find on the amp it would work great but if ur planing on doing comps i would get more than the recomended power for the subs also your box should be around 8ft^3 tuned to bout 40htz if your running the speakers off the headunit its gunna be under powered i would rec a amp for thos to evan if u bridge the headunit it still wont be enough

  • Can a broken brake light switch cause a new car battery to go completely dead overnight?

I've been having a problem with my car not starting. I checked the alternator. No problem. I changed to a new battery. Radio, clock, lights were all turned off. But the next day, the battery is completely dead again.

If the brake light switch is broken on %26quot;On%26quot; position, is it possible that this could drain all the power from the new battery? How do I find out if the brake light switch is a problem?

Thank you for your advice. Can a broken brake light switch cause a new car battery to go completely dead overnight?

Battery drains, ac doesn't blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?

Car: 96' Isuzu rodeo V6 3.2L engine (automatic transmission)

Problem: It all started with the a/c. When one wanted to turn on the ac no air would come out from the vents.

A day later the check engine and battery light came on the dash. We noticed that the volt reading on the dash was by 8. That being the case, both the alternator and battery were changed. Even with the new alternator and battery in place the volt reading on the dash was barely 10. So far we have taken the alternator to 2 different places and they tell us that its good, but the battery is being drained dead. If the problem is due to burned links how does one go about finding this out?

as for the ac not blowing any air, what could the answer be? ( fan clutch?)

is there a correlation between the ac problem and the battery being drained , or do advance auto part workers not know how to test alternators, and THATS the problem?

sorry for the long post, your responses will be greatly apreciatedBattery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
I own one of these and had the same problem. Being a mechanic, I had to figure it out myself. The fan does not blow until the alternator is putting out more than battery voltage (charging). I've also had alternator problems requiring three warranty replacement alternators. You probably need to get another new alternator. By the way, with the engine running, you should have 13.4 to 14.4 volts at the battery.Battery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
Usually a battery drain like that is caused by an internal short in the alternator, it will still charge the vehicle while running but it will also drain the battery when sitting. Does the battery have enough cca for the vehicle, there are several other possiblities with the electrical system on that vehicle, if the blower motor doesn't blow at all check fuses first, and you should check them with a test light, in a worst case senario it could be a body ground problem which will take some testing or a new blower motor.Battery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
To check the alt still on the car take a metal screwdriver and touch the back side of the alt, if it magnetizes to it then it is still good.

As far as your A/C sounds like a short in the blower motor, and yes that could cause the battery to drain on some occasions. Hope it helpsBattery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
You need to check your blower motor, it sounds like it just finally died. More than likely the blower motor going out and the other problems listed are coincidence. The problem with your charging system is a tough one without lookin at it personally. I would get a multimeter or voltmeter and check your battery at the terminals while it is running and see if the voltage reading is close to 14.5. Other than that I would check your fusible links, wiring, and make sure all connections are tight. You can get you a repair manual at a auto parts store too help you with this if you want. They have a lot info you can use to help. Good luck.Battery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
check the blower motor it could be shorted and will drain the battery. the voltmeter is only telling you the battery condition.detach the blower connection and check voltage drain for confirmation before costly removal

In India we will open and detach the +ve terminal cable from the battery if the car switches off youre alternator is blown.make sure its not touching any part of the vehicle.

Am not liable for any damages due to this adviceBattery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
Sounds like either a belt issue. i.e. No belt. Or Not enough tension on a belt and your pully wheels are just slipping and not catching the belt. NOTE: Make sure you install the alternator totally straight with no angle. If your alternator is just a hair off it doesn't keep the belt flow in line making it slip off the pullies and also wearing out the bearings/brushes in your alternator.

You might want to check some relays also.Battery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
it sounds to me like the blower motor is defective. but there are other issues too. possiblly the blenddoors are not opening and that could be bad vacuum lines but for sur e you have a draw on the battery somewhere

that is an electrical issue and diagnostics are costly. also you might check the ac switch in the dash

hard to say when you can not see the vehicleBattery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
It appears you have answered your own question. The AC is the problem. Check it out.Battery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
I am inclined to think the ac compressor may be going (seizing up) as mentioned by another and that this is causing problem. As it gets up over 2000 rpm's your are then turning things at close to the proper speed. under that and the system is straining to keep going. If your belts dont turn at proper speed you will have, 1) battery drainage ie alternator not charging. 2 No AC ie AC compressor sluggish or seized (causing 1st problem)Battery drains, ac doesn%26039;t blow, and alternator is good (supposedly)?
unplug air ac from ac check blower with heater. sounds like clutch on ac is getting ready to seize up

    I want to get a H O Alternator?

I have a 2001 Chrysler 300m that has a 130amp factory alternator on it. I want to change it because my lights keep dimming every time the bass hits. How big should I go as far as amps? Is there any thing else I should do? Please help!I want to get a H O Alternator?
Consider doing the big 3 upgrade before you buy the alternator you should see a significant change. Maybe even look into an audio battery like a KINETIK HC600. What are you running as a system?

    Alternator Problem?

Well i reversed my cable connections and now i have an alternator issue i think. how can i check it with out taking it out. i have a 97 ford ranger 4 cylander and i was told that it might just be a fuse problem. i change my fuse link becasue that was fried. there are no fuses in the box that are fried. there are big black square ones thats say for but i dont know if they are bad because i cant see in side. i am also looking for my owners manuel mine was taking, does anyone know where to get a new one quick or free. If it is the alternator i want to change it my self, i did my cars one are they like the same? Need help ThanksAlternator Problem?
You can go to an auto parts store and get a Hayes manual or try getting a hold of a Ford dealership ask for the parts department, they should be able to answer your questions. My husband does it all the time if he has a problem that he can't solve. Good Luck

  • Noisy belt...?

I have just has the fan/alternator belt changed on my car but it keeps making a squeeky noise (it has mainly stopped though).

Any idea's on how to get rid of it? some people say WD-40........Noisy belt...?
does it tend to get louder and more persistent when it rains?

i had a belt that was absolutely obnoxious when it got wet, and i ended up putting corn starch on it to dry it out. weird. but it worked.

i have no idea if this would work for you, but if it gets irritating enough, you might try anything.Noisy belt...?
Under no circumstances put WD40 on it.

You have either got a belt that is too loose, or there is a problem with one of the bearings being driven by the belt.

I would suggest you take it back to who ever changed it and get them to check it out for youNoisy belt...?
Check for tension first, approx 45 degree of twist. if it is set right with the engine running hold a candle to the working edge, regular cheep white candle not lit, the wax will rub onto the belt and stop the noise, repeat when required. sounds odd but it does work.Noisy belt...?
Hello, Get a good make furniture polish Like Mr Sheen (if I am allowed to say, I am sure I will get shot if not) Mr Sheen has silicone in it, spray this on your belt, this will stop it, you may need to do it again at some point.

    Good luckNoisy belt...?
your local auto store has a thing called belt dressing, it softens and smooths the sounds of belts. WD40 is not the answer as it is an oil and oil is bad for belts ! It will deteroritite them! Check your belts and hoses for wear every 3500 miles when you change your oil! please ask any questions. I will answer to the best of my ability (I Do Not Work At An Automivive Store!!!) (I will not give you a place to buy!)Noisy belt...?
Its not tight enough, after a while it stretches a bit so it starts to slip and squealNoisy belt...?
its the exhaust, u need to get a new oneNoisy belt...?
put talcum powder on it. Just a little bit not a lot. then it will be quiet. it's just slipping a bitNoisy belt...?
    |Take it back to the garage that put it on, they haven't put it on properly. Any repairs if you aren't happy are best dealt with by them you may well make it worseNoisy belt...?
    oil itNoisy belt...?
sounds like the belt isnt tight enough

    id bring it backNoisy belt...?
It's either too loose or too tight! Or maybe even the wrong belt has been fitted. When does it squeak, when you rev up (loose and slipping) or all the time (tight or wrong size)

Are you sure its the belt making the noise and not the alternator or water pump bearings?

You dont say model/ year of car !!!!Noisy belt...?
I have to admit that I go with the repair or replace crowd. If it is the belt then the use of a lubricant (which is what the WD40 is) might give you a temporary fix but it will not be a solution. First check the wear and tension on the belt . Then work your way through the other 'can be wrongs' until you eliminate the possibles and find the real culprit. Just start with the simple (read easy) and work through the list. But get a manual for the car (check the library if you don't want to buy one yet) even if you are not going to ever take the do-it-yourself route. If you have at least a basic understanding of the vehicle in its' possible problems and repairs it will save you a lot of time, money and frustration when you do need something done.

How much would it cost to buy an alternator?

OK i just asked a question about getting an alternator for my car but i guess i didnt have enough details because the answers varied greatly.

I have a '99 Mercury Cougar, its the alternator because i changed the batteries and everything( i also had pros look at it) My dad said he knows people that said they could do it fo $35 or so, but the thing is, he lives in another state and i need to have the car fixed by monday. I dont think im gonna go to a junkyard but it dont think it neccesarily has to be a new one.How much would it cost to buy an alternator?

    Alternator problem? Not sure?

My truck stopped running yesterday while coming to an intersection so I can't tell if I lost the ability to steer, I was able to start it again right away.

This morning it turned on and the engine was %26quot;rumbling/shaking/vibrating%26quot;- not sure exactly how to describe it, then it died and it won't start again although it seems to want to turn over. I can open the electric windows.

Oil change 1900 miles ago, alternator replaced 4-5 months ago (although I know they can go %26quot;bad%26quot;), replaced two of the tensioners (not the AC tensioner) because the belt was %26quot;screaming%26quot;, belt is making noise again, new battery, 1/2 tank of gas.Alternator problem? really should replace belt tensioner when you replace belt but wouldnt maybe motor run bad that woul dbe fuel or spark problem if it was alternator bad wouldnt start many times and couldnt drive it much more than a hour or it would die and not start again more first id say add a fuel treatment check fuel filter then replace spark plugs then plug wiresAlternator problem? Not sure?
1 check battery and connections...should be 12.7 V at restAlternator problem? Not sure?
check your fuel pump relay, see if it went bad.Alternator problem? Not sure?
Best way to check voltage output of an alternator is with an inexpensive volt meter. Clamp clamp the leads to the battery and set the meter @ 20 volts with the motor running. You should see between 13.5 - 14.0 volts on the meter. If the output voltage isn't within this bracket the alternator is a scrapper once again.

Wish you'd have included the year make and model of the truck. If the starter seems slow turning the motor over it sounds like a low voltage / amperage situation. A cheap way to test the battery is to turn on the headlights to high beam with you watching the lights while someone starts the truck. If they grow dim or go out your battery is low on voltage. You can test battery voltage with a volt meter also. After the battery has been sitting without being charged for at least 12 hours, hook the leads to the battery and set the center nob to 20 volts. You should see 12.85 volts on a fully charged battery. If it's under 12 volts you're going to have trouble starting a car or truck.

What do you think is up with the power steering?

before, the power steering kept slipping and making that screeching sound so we got the belt changed and it fixed it. but now...a few months after we changed the belt, the same problem is happening, but not nearly as much. keep in mind it happens way more often in cold weather. also when you hear the screeches, the headlights dim, which mean the alternator is slipping right? and if you turn the wheel all the way, sometimes the battery charge indicator light up.

what do you think is wrong? not enough power steering fluid? or does the belt need to be adjusted? what is it?

if it does need to be readjusted, how would i do that? do you know if it has a tensioner or if i'd have to adjust the position of the alternator to change the tension?

    91' toyota previa

thanksWhat do you think is up with the power steering?
new belts will stretch so you probably need to tighten the belt. Most of the time you need to loosen the alternator Use a pry bar to pull it tight and re tighten the bolts. the alternator is on a slide mount so this can be done What do you think is up with the power steering?
sounds like the blt is slipping, try replacing the belt and if that dont work make sure you have enough tension on the belt itself. What do you think is up with the power steering?
Usually when you hear that squealing, you need more fluid in your powersteering reservoir.

As far as the lights going out/blinking, there must be a short in the wiring, or possible a problem with the ignition switch.

It very well could be that you need a new power steering pump. Here is the web site for a very affordable place to get auto parts.

How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?

I have not done any real work on cars for a number of years. The occational alternator and oil changes. I would like to know if I could pull off doing this timing belt thing on my own. Is there that much to it? Does it take any wierd tools? Or would it be easier to pay someone to do it. I have all the basic tools for regular maintenace. Does the car need to be re-timed when I am done? How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
Well it is a time consuming job, but not terribly difficult. As the engine is transverse mounted there is very little clearance in which to work and you have to be a little bit of a contortionist and have a reasoable number of adapters and extensions to get into the tight places. There may additionally be a couple of TORX fittings, though I cannot recall if Honda uses those in place of Allen fittings where flush mounted hands are required for clearance.

Also, as I recall, Honda recommends changing the water pump when you change the belt, as you have done most of the work to get access to it when you do a belt change and it would be a shame to have done all of that only to have to be back in there again should the water pump fail.

As to changing the belt, there are a couple of covers to remove and often some components are in the way. It varies from car to car, but it is not unusual to have to remove things like air filter housings, radiator reservoirs, windshield wiper tanks, and sometimes even starter motors and alternators. It just depends upon what you find in the way.

Any good Chilton's or Haynes manual will detail the procedure for changing the belt itself, and how to get the timing right when you do.

It is terribly important, of course, that the cam shaft and crank shaft pulleys remain in precisely the same relationship to one another that they are now in. If one rotates even a tooth out of the current relationship they car will run very poorly, if at all. Fortunately, Hondas are what are called %26quot;non-interference%26quot; engines, which means that even with a valve fully extended it can never get low enough to strike a piston when it is at the top of its range. Accordingly, if you get it wrong the worst that happens is that your car either will not run, or will run badly, but no internal damage to the valves or pistons will result. and then you will have to go back and recheck your timing marks.

On most cars you will have to remove the old belt before you can put the new one on, and so you will have to refer to the manual for aligning the timing marks. However, sometimes there is just enough room on the cam and crank pulleys to push the belt to the innner edge and slip on the edge of the new belt on the outer. If so, then timing is assured and one just takes a sharp blade, cuts off the old belt to get it out of the way, and then slides the new belt on the remainder of the way.

Now one other important thing to do is, after the new belt is in place, but before you have put everything else back together, you put a large wrench or socket and rachet on the crank shaft bolt and turn the engine over a few times, just to make sure it turns smoothly to assure that you have assembled it properly. Turning it over slowly will apply far less stress to the system if something is awry than would a starter motor.

Also, do not buy a cheap belt. Get the belt from the dealer. You may pay $15 or $20 more for it, but in that the far greater investment here is your time, as this can take a shade-tree mechanic several hours, it is not worth scrimping on a belt that may fail prematurely. How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?

Is it your car? If so...go buy a repair manual for it. $20 and decide for yourself.

When ever I buy a car (used), that's one of the FIRST things I buy for it.How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
If your car is at the point where you need the timing belt changed, I would suggest bringing it in for service regardless of whether you can do it yourself or not. Events such as this should provide you the excise to get a professional once-over to see if there is anything else near failure as well that you cannot visually inspect by lifting the hood.

This idea may be a bit more expensive then you want, but investing a little money in a 7 year old Honda is an excellent investment as this car could easily run for 15 years if well maintained. How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
its not too hard. you'll find more frustration in the fact that you have to take a bunch of stuff off the car to be able to get at the belt. they really cram that engine in there. How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
Changing a timing belt is not excessively difficult. Typcially its getting to it that's the most difficult. Especially how they pack the engines into the vehicles these days.

The other important thing is making sure everything is properly re-assembled before starting the engine. This especially means making sure the timing is correct before re-assembling everything. If the timing is off by even one tooth, you could have pistons hitting valves and requiring major engine repair.

To answer all your little questions:

Typically a timing belt replacement does not need any %26quot;weird%26quot; tools. You'll need a good pry bar and a breaker bar to remove the bolt typically attached to the harmonic balancer (the hardest part to remove). If you have an air gun, it would probably be the best.

It would definitely be easier to pay someone to do it, but it's not an impossible job for someone who is mechanically inclined and if it's your first time, give yourself at least the weekend to get the job done. How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
If you know how to follow instructions you can do anything, don't be scare to do anything if you know you can do it. To change a timing belt is easy. Go to Auto Zone and buy the Book of the year and model of your car. Them read it very carefully. Honda have a tensioner pulley that lose the belt. You maybe need help of someone to hold the tensioner when they pull it when you change the belt. If the socket handle is short, look for a long iron tube put it in the handle to help you to pulled. is easier that way. I am a woman and I did change the water pump of my Honda Accord of 2004. including put new belt. I did follow the book instructions and it work. Honda wanted $878.00 to do it for me. Hell no!!! I said.

I went to Auto Zone and to do it my self it cost me just $85.95. Whoa!!! True.

Also don't be shy of asking for help to people that work in garages, ask them where is located the tensioner. if you don't know where. and ask them to show you. some people are nice and can tell you how.

Don't be afraid but always take pictures before you start your job so you can remember how to put it back if you don't know how. Follow book instructions as well.

    Good luck!!!

already changed battery and alternator. even when turned off it draws power.dies while runningHow can i fix or find a short in the electrical system?need info on how to troubleshoot an electrical problem ?
If you don't have appropriate tools, including a good meter, you're best off taking it in to a shop.

If a car dies while running due to no voltage the charging system isn't doing what it should. Off hand I would suspect the new alternator; either if was defective or damaged on installation. Another possibility is that you have an external voltage regulator that is bad and not allowing the alternator to do it's job.

A good meter is best but even a $10.00 voltmeter from Radio Shack or an autoparts store will tell you if the alternator is putting +/- 14.6 Volts on the battery. If it isn't, ask an auto parts store if your vehicle uses an external voltage regulator; if it does, replace it.How can i fix or find a short in the electrical system?need info on how to troubleshoot an electrical problem ?
Take the vehicle to an auto electrical shop.

I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?

I just had the serpentine and the alternator drive belts changed, but is there a separate timing belt on my van? If so, how expensive if it to get it changed? I was quoted $450 or so, so they must have to take a lot of the engine apart.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
Chrysler's service manuals recommend 90,000 miles at the earliest. I would say 75K to 80K is appropriate.

Basically, we have to remove the belts, pulleys, motor mount, lay the PS Pump and AC Compressor aside and remove the bracket and remove the front covers. It is also a good idea to inspect or replace the water pump while in there.

$450 seems to be about average.

I'm assuming you have the 3.0L since you mention timing belt (3.3L and 3.8L have a timing chain, not a belt) and they are prone to oil leaks at the cam seals. It is a good time to do them as well, if they are leaking.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
Look in your owners manual if you have one.

Mot vehicles recommend to replace it at every 75k to 100k miles, or 10 years, whichever is first. Chrysler manuals usually recommend having it done at 90k miles, with no mention of age. However, I would change it if it gets to 10 years old and has not reached the recommended miles yet just for safety sake.

50,000 miles is too early in most instances to replace the timing belt. At that rate, you'd have replaced it twice in the recommended replacement interval. I replaced mine at 100k miles (and about 6 years old) and it still looked great, which is how you want it, you don't want it all worn out and cracked when it's replaced.

$450 is about right for a timing belt on a voyager, only reason it should go higher is if they find something else needs to be replaced while they're in there. In that case, they should always ask before adding anything to the repair order.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
should be replaced every 50,000 but most people go to 75;000

450 is about right they have to tear down the front of the engineI have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
About 75,000 miles is good on those engines. However, if your at that mileage, spend a little extra, and replace the water pump, and timing belt tensioner at the same time. The timing belt drives the water pump, and if you've got that sort of mileage on the van, the pump is reaching the end of it's service life. Much better to take care of it, since you'll be right there anyway. It will cost you less in the long run.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?

Regarding Ford Escort's coolant level sensor replacement...?

I have a 1995 Ford Escort LX Sport that runs great (though I keep having to replace the exhaust system), but needs to have the the coolant level sensor replaced. Anyone know how easy it is to replace this myself? I am not a beginner when it comes to car repair (have done my own brakes, oil changes, belts, alternators, starters, selenoids, tune-ups, etc), but have never touched any sensors before, I would like to know what I am getting into before I decide to track down the elusive part and skip the ASE Certified mechanic. Thanks!!

this is no big deal. you can get away with not changing it by unplugging it and jumping the terminals with a paper clip. it wont damage anything, your light will go off, and you wont have to worry about replacing it. just make sure the reservoir is always full.Regarding Ford Escort%26039;s coolant level sensor replacement...?

dont bother to fix itRegarding Ford Escort%26039;s coolant level sensor replacement...?
the coolant level sensor is part of the cap for the coolant reservoir. very basic, disconnect the electrical connector on top of the reservoir cap, pop the cap up and pull the whole thing out of the reservoir, pop the new one in, plug it in and verify you have ample coolant in the reservoir and the light is out.

I have a 1997 Nissan Altima. The battery %26amp; alternator were changed recently. Battery has tested good. I also had a recent tuneup. My car will sometimes die while idling. Could be a number of things. Sounds like carbon build-up in some of your emission control sensors. That is a lot more common these days with ethanol enriched fuel. If you can, find a gas station that has no ethanol in it's gas. That should help some. Also, go to one of the chain auto parts stores and ask for %26quot;Sea-Foam%26quot; fuel additive. It works really good at cleaning your fuel system and displacing water in your fuel. I would try that first before running up a big mechanics bill. Good luck. What is wrong with my car? What is an outer tie-rod? How urgent is fixing it if it's loose?

I went to Firestone to get an alignment done because my 94 ford escort pulls really hard to the right. They said that my left front outer tie-rod was loose and that that was the problem and doing an alignment wouldn't help. They said they would have to replace it, why does it need replaced if it is just loose? Can they not be tightened back up? Going to cost $130. If I wait until I'm better off money-wise is it going to worsen the problem? I have a friend whose uncle is a mechanic who has changed my alternator and done tune ups for me before, do you think this is something that can be done without one of the machine that lifts your cars? Any and all suggestions and info appreciated thanks. What is an outer tie-rod? How urgent is fixing it if it%26039;s loose?
    HI

A tie rod is what steers the tires. If it lose he didn't mean that the nut is lose (as the nut has a carter pin through it ) he means that its shot and wore out.

As for urgent .... if it breaks you won't be going anywhere and it may cause you to crash if your driving it.. as when it brakes that one tire will turn all the way out or in and you won't have any control over the car.

    good luck

timWhat is an outer tie-rod? How urgent is fixing it if it%26039;s loose?
this is something that can be aken care of without lifting the vehicle. the tie rods are very important. they are what in a sense %26quot; tie your hub assembly into your vehicle.%26quot; in the unfortunate case that it was to brea it would kick your %26quot;tire%26quot; in a direction that you really dont want it to go. if your going to replace it you need to treat it like a headlight or brake pads or wheel bearings and just do them al at the same time. keeps it simple. if your friends uncle is a mechanic he should be able to do this for you pretty easily. if he is willing. there are some little quirks however about tie rods that can really stress you out. you need to look up your vehicles specs on the computer and find out what you need. or give your local dealership a call, have the last eight digits of your vin number handy. they will need it. have them tell you the parts involved in your tie rods. then just call your local auto parts store with the information and you will more than likely save more.... HOWEVER!!!! you need to know that tie rods dont just go out. did you hit someting hard? a curb or something? that would do it. anyhow. if you have been driving around like this for a while it may not hurt to continue untill you can get the money saved. but you definitely want to put this in the top of your list to get done. it could be a dangeerous thing if they brokeWhat is an outer tie-rod? How urgent is fixing it if it%26039;s loose?
The tie-rod END is probably what he %26quot;said%26quot; or %26quot;meant%26quot;. That's a very easy replacement. If that price is all inclusive; alignment, tie-rod end, and labor, go for it. If not, get your friend's uncle to do it, if he can. Then go get your alignment.

How much will a complete tune up cost on an 1993 model just purchased?

I'm considering buying a 1993 mitsubishi eclipse with around 130,000 miles. He has apparently recently changed the alternator belt, the ac belt, radiator and put in a new battery. I want to keep this car running for a decent amount of time, hopefully past 200,000. If i want to keep it in shape exactly what other parts should i replace and how much will each part cost to install (I will not be preforming any repairs or replacements). How often should i replace these as well?

Anyone with knowledge on car batteries, please respond..?

I have a 96 toyota corolla. it's not a nice car, so i don't want to take it to a mechanic and pay to get it fixed. the problem is, the battery won't stay charged for more than 10 hours. just got a new battery, it went dead within 24 hours. i am going to try and troubleshoot myself with a multimeter on the fuses. my question is, what do I do once I find the battery leak? I don't see how finding the fuse leak will give enough info to troubleshoot the battery prob further.

if it makes any difference, i recently replaced the radiator and changed the alternator belt. thanks all.Anyone with knowledge on car batteries, please respond..?
Remove the negative battery terminal and place a test light between the terminal and the cable end. If there is a significant draw on the battery, the test light will light bright. (Be sure everything is turned off and all of the doors are closed.)

Now simply remove the fuses one at a time and recheck the test light in the same manner - when you remove a fuse and the light goes out, you have pinpointed the faulty circuit. If none of the fuses shuts the light off, remove the alternator positive feed and recheck the light.

Added: Once you find the faulty circuit, for instance, the interior light fuse - I would start by removing all of the courtesy bulbs. If that doesn't put the light out, you may need to get a wiring diagram and see if that particular circuit feeds any other components (such as a trunk light, under hood light, glove box light, instrument lights and so forth.)Anyone with knowledge on car batteries, please respond..?

Well, the radiator should be a non-issue in this case.

But, when you changed the alternator belt, did you get it tight enough?

Also, the problems you are describing could be consistent with a shot alternator. Is it dying after 10 hours of running or after 10 hours?

Could also be an electrical leak in your car draining the battery while it's off. Especially on a car that age.

Assuming you're right, and the battery is losing charge, then just replace the battery. The way to see if that's the case simply is just to get the car running and make sure the battery is charged up all the way. Then shut off the car and take the battery out. Set the battery on the counter. Next day, put the battery back in and see how it performs after 12 or so hours out of the car.Anyone with knowledge on car batteries, please respond..?

now that you have a meter, the first thing to do is check the voltage at the batt with car running.

if the alt is working it will measure 14.5 volts or above.

if it reads 12.5 or 13 volts , the alt is not charging.

A working alt will charge a new batt in about 10 minuets.Anyone with knowledge on car batteries, please respond..?
It's the alternator. Do a voltage test when running and if its not around 13.5-14.5 volts, then its a bad alternator.

The transmission solenoid wiring harness may be damaged. Some of the codes are transmission solenoids and they normally don't all go bad unless your transmission fluid has never been changed and is all gummed up or fried from heat. The other codes are O2 sensors. I would replace the sensors and reset the codes. If you aren't good at tracing circuits and transmission work, you will need to hire a good transmission person.Check engine light is on these were the codes they gave me?
Hello, I cannot stress enough enough how important it is to give the YMM (year, make, model) to the technician when trying to troubleshoot a vehicle. but i will try anyway. There is a thing called current codes and history codes but if you replaced the battery there should not be any codes unless there is a current problem. I would say an open ground or chaffed harness is the culprit but you said that they only changed the rear bumper? try to supply the YMM and i can help more! :) Be sure you didn't leave a ground off when you replaced the alternator!

How do I go about suppressing injector noise off a Cummins N14 in my mobile HF radio equipment?

In my mobile hf equipment in my semi I get a very loud buzz that follows the engine rpm's. The radio is a RCI-2950, I'm using it for 10/11 till I can get propper Hf equipment. I brought it up to my company and they cleaned the batter terminals and changed my alternator. I also installed a filter on the power leads for the radio and a ferrite choke on the extension speaker wires. Someone suggested I put them on the leads for the injector pumps but on the ratshack web site all the comments were that they would do no good. My vhf fm radio does not pick this noise up nor does my music radio. The noise coming from the radio is not only annoying but almost loud enough to hurt your ears even with the volume down, can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to curb the ringin in my ears. How do I go about suppressing injector noise off a Cummins N14 in my mobile HF radio equipment?
As a ham, I figured you would have tried some of the ham related websites in regards to noise abatement on HF

Step one is Ratshack is how can we sell a cell phone for you today? They basically got out of the real electronics business years ago.. I find their customers sometimes don't understand certain principles unfortuneately

    Check this website out:

http://www.k0bg.com/noiseid.html and try to follow some of the hints.. another thing may be a small DSP filter which some have found to help with noise.

If you are having the issue, you may want to ask your mechanic to see if Cummins has come out with a bulletin about the noise (as other truckers would be moaning about the issue interfering with their cb radios also)

Any Ideas of what this might be and how to correct the issue?2001 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 Alternator Question?
Fords are very fickle about wiring layouts and connectors. It is imperative that you have the wiring laid out exactly as it was from the factory...including the connections...they must fit factory tight. If all that is in order...it might just be going thru a relearning process which could take up to 50 miles. Fords are the worst vehicles around when it comes to any electrical problems. Best of Luck to you!!

    My Car Belt Keeps Squealing??

T make a long story short I have a 1988 mercury grand marquis colony park wagon. It onl has 50,000 original miles. Not a bad car, but ever since we changed the alternator, the belt began squeaking badly. Then we realized that the belts were bad, and we replaced the belts.

Soon, it started squealing again as the new belt got broken in and loser. We kept tightening up the alternator, because it was coming from that belt {and that was really the only thing we could tighten up}, but now the alternator is tightened all the way and it keeps squealing. It only happens when it is cold and you have too many things on, like the radio and the headlights on at the same time, with the heat.

The car is power everything, and I don't think its the alternator {Its a regular 65 amp alt. not a high charging one.}. I bought some belt conditioner, but I have to spray it on every day for it to stop squealing.

Any ideas on how to fix it without getting a new belt?My Car Belt Keeps Squealing??
The belt tensioner for the alternator is messed up. Change it. What's happening is that the belt keeps getting elongated because the tensioner is causing the belt to drag and the belt will fail again shortly because of this. I'm thinking about changing pickups on my guitar. Any advice?

First and foremost know that this is the first guitar I ever owned. I've had it for more than ten years and I'm really sentimental. It's an Ibanez AX120 and is one of those really-quality-but-inexpensive guitars. I've recently thought about putting better pickups in to make it even better. Right now I have the standard Axis AH1 at the neck and AH2 at the bridge. If I swap out, I'm more than likely going with Gibson humbuckers (at least that style, anyway). There are several layers to my question:

    1) Are there any dangers in doing this? Do I risk really screwing up my %26quot;baby%26quot;? And by %26quot;screwing up%26quot; I mean both the performance of the guitar (risking electrical problems? Does the design of the guitar influence how a pickup will perform?) and the appearance of the guitar (I don't want it to end up looking like a tinkering high schooler got a hold of it).

    2) Is this easy enough to do on my own? I'm not a mechanic or luthier, but I'm no dummy either and would prefer to save the money if its difficulty may be equivalent to, say, changing an alternator in a car.

    3) I'm open to brand and product suggestions. What I have in mind is the standard Gibson Les Paul- or SG-style humbucker, in a silver/chrome plating. Actually . . . it has to be chrome or black in color, but that shouldn't be a problem to find. Any other brands I should look into for that style humbucker? (I'm not interested in single coil--I already have a telecaster for that).

    4) It appears that the two pickups on my guitar currently are slightly different (AH1 vs. AH2). Does this mean I need to buy two different kinds of pickups? Or can I just buy two of the same kind, and then their position on the guitar will make all the difference?I%26039;m thinking about changing pickups on my guitar. Any advice?
    Okay, let's do this point-by-point.

    1) There are some dangers, as in everything else, but not many. You don't actually have to damage the guitar or the pickups to change them out. The only real risk is if you don't connect the wires properly, in which case it could suddenly lose the connection and go silent.

    2) It should be. All that really has to be done is to take off whatever cover in on your particular guitar (I'm not totally familiar with that model, but I think it's just the pickup ring?), pull the pickup out far enough to work with it, and either de-solder the pickups leads from the selector switch and ground or cut the wires. Then you put in you new pickups, either solder the leads where the old ones went or splice the wires (by twisting them together, soldering them, and covering the connection with electrical tape), and reattach the cover/pickup ring. If you don't have a soldering iron, and can't borrow or buy one, then this is probably not a good thing to do yourself.

    3) I recommend you check out seymourduncan.com. They have a section of their website called the tone comparison chart. Find humbuckers in the list, and look at the options. It will tell you the impedance of all their pickups models, and a simple tone guide. The impedance is how %26quot;hot%26quot; the pickups is; the higher it is the more output power the pickup has. As for the tone, each pickup will show a Bass/Middle/Treble chart. Very straightforward to compare. For example, I'm looking into getting a Duncan Distortion pickup, which has a readout of 7/8/9 by that chart, meaning it has strong highs, softer mids, and lower but still strong bass presence. See? So if you wanted, say, a lot of midrange, find one that says 5/8/7 or something. I don't know your preferred tone, but I usually recommend the Duncan JB for people who play clean to mid-gain, then Duncan Distortion to people who use a lot of distortion, and the Duncan Alternative 8 for people who use fuzz effects. DiMarzio also makes excellent pickups, but I don't know much about them, so I can't make any recommendations.

I think the chrome cover is actually a separate piece, so you can keep the ones you aleady have and just change the pickup under it, but I may be wrong about that.

    4) Usually, neck pickups have lower output, because a pickup closer to the middle of the string has more to pick up. But most of the tone difference you hear is because of the position relative to the string, so if you put two identical pickups in the bridge and neck positions, they aren't going to sound the same. Most pickups (including Gibsons and Duncans) come in a bridge version or a neck version, though.

I hope this helped. If you have any more questions you can reach me at zephirwynd@yahoo.com.

  • How long will my 1989 toyota celica st last?

I know with proper maintenance it could last a very long time. Its already at 250,xxx miles and is running good still. Changed the muffler, alternator, have oil changes and more. I just want to know true opinons of how long the car can last. How long will my 1989 toyota celica st last?
Well, you are doing pretty well now. Are you burning any oil? If not, just keep changing it every 3-5k and make sure you get the timing belt changed (if applicable) and I bet you can get another 100K. Just baby the baby. How long will my 1989 toyota celica st last?
I agree with everything PhilGee said. Provided that you aren't burning much oil (1 quart every 1,500 miles or less is not good, for example). Also, if your engine seals are good, that helps. My aunt has a 1997 Toyota Rav4 4 cylinder with 4wd that she stopped driving after 318,000 miles. But you'll have to decide how many miles is %26quot;far enough%26quot; for you.

Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?

99 Jeep XJ, my drive belt squeals something awful when my AC runs, I recently changed my alternator and in the process discovered how to adjust the drive belt... so I tightened it to where I thought it would stop squealing when AC is on, it is worse.... I can't beleive tightening it doesn't fix the problem, I need a new belt don't I?Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
You could have over tightened it. If it is all run off one belt, try taking some vaseline and VERY CAREFULLY put it on the belt when its running. If it stops squeaking then yes a new belt will likely stop the squeaking. If not you need to investigate your belt tensioner, and idler if you have one, the pulley on your power steering pump and you ac clutch. One of them is most likely squeaking from a bad bearing.Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
It might be the tensioner or the a/c compressor clutchDrive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
Maybe, or an new A/C compressor.Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
You surely need a new belt, but I would check the pully and tensioner to make sure you don't have a bearing out.Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
if over tighten you wil do more damadge to costly componentsDrive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
If the belt is truly tightened correctly, then yes you do.

Double check to make sure it didnt slip a bit as you were tightening it, I am not familiar with your particular application but I cant believe it doesnt have an automatic tensioner, is it positioned properly?Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
not necessarily so try rubbing a bar of soap on the belt (with the motor not running or spray some WD40 on the belt with the motor running --- KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAR OF THE FAN OR YOU MAY LOSE A FINGER OR WORSE -- GOOD LUCK and happy motoringDrive belt squeals when A/C is running...?
I would agree with KOOLSTER=D, you need to be sure the belt has proper tension, but not too much tension. Over tightening it can cause damage to your accessories and could be the reason for the squeal.

How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?

I have a Toyota Corolla 2004 LE edition. In order not to run into problems, how often should I get the Alternator and Timing Belt changed? Every 5 years? I know this seems like a very obselete question, but I want to make sure my car is in good shape. It currently has 42,290 miles on it and it's 3 years old.How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
Timing belts are 80k-100k miles depending on driving conditions.

    Alternator Belt ....???

Toyota I can only assume is like Nissan, Honda, %26amp; VW in that they check belts and hoses as part of their maintenance every 10k miles. Those would be changed as needed but at 42,290k miles your car would have gone through a lot if it already needs these items changed but every car has its kwirks. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
The recommended time to change your timing belt is every 60,000 miles. If you wait until it breaks, you will be replacing an engine instead. Since replacing the timing belt entails remove all of the other belts first, it would be a great time to replace the accessory belts at the same time. Rack time is expensive. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
Do you have the 4 or 6?

A good way to tell is look at it, if it has small cracks or glazing it needs to be replaced. The cracks will be in the V side not the smooth side.

If you have a 4 cyl then you have a timing chain, the V6 has a belt, if it breaks there is no motor damage that is not a interference motor. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
if you have a 4 cylinder engine you have a serpentine belt and it should be changed about every 50k or as needed, and 4 cyl. has a timing chain not a belt. if you have a v6 then you have two drive belts that should be changed 50k or as needed, and the timing belt should be changed every 90k or as needed. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
Once a yearHow often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
Starting in 1998, Corollas went to a timing CHAIN. Theoretically, you should never have to change it,

The accessory belt (serpentine) should be inspected every oil change to be safe and changed when cracks appear. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
They dont make a 6 cyl corolla, and corolla's use a timing chain from 98 on up.How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
The local Toyota shop recommends changing the timing belt every 60k in hot climates like Texas. The timing belt (not to be confused with the alternator/water pump/compressor belt) is covered and thus is not readibly viewable. If the timing belt breaks, all the valves are bent in a second and the engine has to be rebuilt. Is is about a $3000 job vs. a $100 belt. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?
omg seems like no one read the instruction booklet

there is a part on the book talking to mantenience in that part will tell you when you have change it and corrolla dont use timing belt, they use timming chain that you never need to change( in 10years will stretch only 3/16 inch) then change it

for the alt belt look for some scratchs and loose parts, or cracks if you look one of these then you have to change it

I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?

The battery seems to drain after about 200 miles. I tried looking it up but with no luck. At first I thought it might be the alternator but every other one I had to go bad just did suddenly and there was nothing to do but change out the alternator.

How do you determine if the battery is adequate?I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?
i own a repair shop, and you do this by the cranking amps it has built in to it,,but yours sounds like a bad alternator draining the battery because the size of the battery wont make it drain in that few of driving miles, you need to take it to any auto zone and have them check it while its in the car, they do this for free and then you,ll know for sure what it is making it go down,,good luck,i hope this help,s.I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?
like dodge man, the cold cranking amps should be on a lable on the battery, any battery catalog will list your battery by application

and the required cca`s. the alternator should be putting out about

14.6 volts. and using a test light check for shorts while the car sits overnight. disconect the negative cable and put the testlight

between the post and bat. cable. the light shouldn`t lite. open the door to turn on the dome lights and it should light. these are the charging system basics and you should be able to pin point your problem hope this helpsI have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?
A bad battery will kill a good alternator, and also if you are testing the alternator on the car running, a bad battery will show that the alternator is bad. A bad starter will kill both the alternator and the battery. All three components make up the starting/charging system. Any one of those components will throw off testing overall if any component is tested on the car. My answer: pull the battery out and have it tested by itself. If it tests bad, that's prolly all your problem was, but you need to replace the batt. and test the alt on the car. If it's good, pull the alt off and have it tested. The results of that second test will tell you if its the starter. honestly it sounds like your alt. and batt are decent, but your starter/cable connections/or something else in your car (bigger stereo) is pulling constant or too much juice. If the alt is not putting out enough juice to run everything in the car and still have some left to keep the batt. fully charged you'd be getting the problem you have. But normally if the alt is going bad, the amount of time it takes to drain the batt should be getting progressively shorter plus in the latter stages, your car won't start anymore and your batt. will be bad. A few of the most common problems leading to %26quot;undercharging%26quot; the batt. is a weak alternator (or bad diode), bad ground connections (which could be any electrical device in the car), or a bigger stereo (which robs the alt. of needed power to charger the batt. properly)I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?
Check your fuses for an alternator fuse. May solve the whole problem. Most auto supplies can test your alternator. Only take s a minute to take a voltage reading.

I lost power steering , after checking various parts I changed the alternator, the loss of power steering, and no fan heater is still occuring I have had the battery checked and it is okay, Has anyone else had electrical type problems similar to mine how can I solve the no fan heater / blower , and the loss of power steering - could that be the fan belt ?Vaux Astra 02 Electrical Problems?
i would say look in the fuse box under the bonnet, some vauxhall models have electrical power steering pumps. there will be some 'maxi' fuses, itll be controlled by one of them. if that doesnt help, try swapping some relays around, see if one's faulty. hope this helpsVaux Astra 02 Electrical Problems?
Not similar to yours but these newer models are well known for electrical problems. The the newest models I've not heard much complaints from, but models like MK4 and MK 3, both of which I've had and both had electrical problems, and both are always on forums with these kinds. I never had any issue with my Merit estate bought brand new in 89 and it got written off about 5 years ago otherwise it was a good car and still running- damn those careless drivers!

Go to astra forums www.vxon.co.uk is excellent. there are other forums i've been to but this one I remember as it was good and I've had good experience on there. I think the other is http://astraownersnetwork.co.uk/forums/ is a new one never tried it before. but its a matter of trial and error and reading through and posting queries as needed on their forums and seeing what responses you get.

Put vauxhall forums or astra forums into a search engine and all the related forum sites will come up and you'll get more detailed and understandable answers from ppl who know their astras.

No the problem is not your fan belt ,i think that you have two separate problems .

sorry i have not been any help.Vaux Astra 02 Electrical Problems?
I don't see what the power steering and the alternator have in common? Its possible your heater fan problem is caused by a blown fuse or failed relay? I recommend you take it to a decent garage and get them to find out exactly what the real problems are.

ok, ima computer geek, so ill understand some of what u say about electronic stuff, but i need to know more about what to get for subs, i dont want to change my alternator... but id like to get some square l5s or l7s from kicker... with a zx1000/1500.1 however ive been told that i need to change it to accomodate the power it will need for the amp... any suggestions/experiences... also how worth it is it to wreck the look of my dash and get a aftermarket deck..CHOSING SUBS... HELP pl0x?
you dont have to change alternator all you will need is a powerfull capasitor cap this keeps from working the alternator hard and i belive helps the life of the battery you you do get one make sure it has a digital screen so you can read the volt readingsCHOSING SUBS... HELP pl0x?
ur not gonna have to upgrade ur alternator with either of those amps. Im runnin 1500 rms rite now in my Jeep with the stock alternator and 3 caps and having no problems. Ur definitely gonna want an aftermarket deck. stock decks just dont have the tuning options that aftermarket deck have. ur gonna want more options with those subs than just %26quot;Bass up%26quot; and %26quot;Bass down%26quot;. and they make installation a lot easier. look into an alpine or pioneer deck

What all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?

i know how to hook the amp up and subs i just wanna know if i will have to change the alternator or the battery or if i can just get like a 100 farad capacitor to keep it from killing my alternator i wanna get this done cheap as possible but i don't wanna worry bout my electrical system later so thanks in advance for ur advice also i would like advice from someone in this field of work thanxWhat all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?
    Ignore lowhz.

If your total system power is 1200 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

    1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator

    2. Upgrade to a yellow top battery

    3. Upgrade the %26quot;Big 3%26quot; - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 2 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in the early death of the alternator as it will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.box.net/shared/uchv4dbk88

You will need Microsoft Excel. If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g

A second battery is never a good idea as it's an added strain on the alternator to charge two batteries AND supply power for the car. The ONLY time a second battery is useful is if the audio system is to be used with the car off.

A capacitor is only good so far as the audio system isn't trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn't provide more power, it's designed to 'stiffen' the voltage to the amp, nothing else. If the current isn't there, a cap won't help.

The alternator must have at least 20% more amperage power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a cap to be of benefit which is ironically the same requirements for an amp to be efficient.

lowhz has not a clue to what he is talking about. You do not need 3 batteries just yet. First thing is to do the big 3 upgrade, high output alternator, then a yellow top optima. Then if you want to get more batteries look into Kinetic, since they are a reputable company. What all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?
Well, what brand and model amp are you going to use? Need to make sure you are getting an actual 3200 rms.

If it is, caps are nowhere near what you need. You need 3 group 31 batteries and a single 250/300 amp alt. All 0 gauge wire. If you want more help, feel free to email me.

se_rdaudio@yahoo.comWhat all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?
if u get the right kinetic battery the only thing left is to beef up ur alt deep cycle is the key and the kinetic r the best. there expensive but upgrade ur primary and adding a secondary of this battery would be the best thing to do

Am i being rob by autoshop?

my car broke down on my way to work.my car just shut off and it wont start again so i called a shop that i always go to and they send me a tow truck.i left my car at the shop and later called me and tell me that i need to replace my alternator. i ask them how much it will cost me?and they said it will cost me $390.00 i was kind of shock that it cost that much to change the alternator so i told them not to do anything.i went back to the shop to get my car, i told them that i dont wanna get my car fix for now.but the guy still charge me 160 dollars for the tow and for checking the car which is i think too much.did they just over charge me?Am i being rob by autoshop?

Well some places are much more pricey than others, so if thats his fee then thats what you'll need to pay. Thats a shame. I bought a used alternator for 30 bucks and had it installed for 10.Am i being rob by autoshop?
Were you overcharged? I can't tell from the information given.

How far was your car towed? How long did the mechanics work on the car to diagnose the problem?

What is the rate charged for shop time? How does the company compute towing charges?

A tow usually runs for about 120-150. Sounds reasonable to me.

How long will my car last?

I have a 1990 Mazda Miata 1.6L engine Rwd with a manual transmission. My current mileage is ~258,000 and when i asked my mechanic few days ago why my engine loses a quart of oil every 4000 miles before my 5000 miles oil change accordingly to my owners manual. He said that my car is too old and its burning oil in which it made a lot of sense. My car however runs pretty good and starts right up at once in whatever weather conditions hot or cold. I always change my engine oil at every single interval and i have even given my car a tune up last year (2008). during the tune up, i replaced the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, air filter, and even changed my alternator and genuine mazda battery. There are absolutely NO fluid leaks under my car in which includes no engine oil, coolent, trans and diffential oil leaks under my car unless i use the air conditionor and there is water dripping down after use which is normal. My A/C system blows really cold too, my mechanic said a few days ago while servicing my A/C, the temperature of my A/C is, I think he said ~35-38 degrees. My car accelerates smoothly without any hesitation or stalls unless i let go of the clutch too early with out giving enough gas(thats normal though for a manual trans).

Anyways, I have always known in my whole entire life that japanese cars are long lasting and reliable. I just wanna know if my car's engine will completely break down causing me to buy a new car or a new engine which is very costly. I'm asking this because my car has extremely high mileage and i just want to know if it will be ok even past 300,000 on my odometer.

So, my last question is, do cars completely break down between ~280000-300000 miles or more? I'm just wondering and somewhat worried because i am planning on buying a new car under 20 grands in about year. I am also planning to sell my car then at a reasonable price on like ebay or any other website that can sell cars so i can make a downpayment of atleast $5000.

Thanks in Advanced! :)How long will my car last?
You will never sell that car or trade it in and get more than $500 for it.

Unless it is using more then 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles you are perfectly fine.

Almost all car manufactures claim that 1 qt per 1,000 miles as exceptable oil usage.

As for how much longer will it last?

Let us know when it finally does die.

Take a pic of the odometer and post it on the web, I bet you see 400,000 miles. How long will my car last?
Engine life varies but well maintained cars last much longer. You're burning oil due to engine wear...it's normal with that many miles. With 258K you have a good shot at 300. Good luck. With that many miles your Miata isn't worth anywhere near 5 grand..more like 1.How long will my car last?
well a car can last forever or it can break down the next day...i have seen vehicles last over 1,000,000 miles or i have seen a brand new car need a new engine within 5000 miles...it all depends....you wont get 5k out of that car though...the best you could pry get is 1000 that is a good price to sell an older car for...it could be a great little 1st car for a teenager....you just dont know how long a car will last its all a gamble

Im building a new car Audio set up and I have a dual in dash dvd player radio with a 1800 watt mono block for my subs and a sony 4 channel amp to power my door speakers and tweeters right now I am running my stock alternator and a deep cycle motor under the hood. Im having my system professionally installed by a local shop and he says my charging system isn't going to be enough he said he would install a 2nd battery in my truck for about 150 bucks for the battery and install its a Kenitec battery the %26quot;cap killer' I was wondering if my stock alternator cant handle whats under my hood how is it going to help by installing a 2nd battery then wouldn't neither of them give me enough power. im just curious to know and suggestion would be nice but i dint want to change my alternator unless its Absolute necessaryElectrical system for car audio?
I would definitley recommend getting a better alternator before gettin a %26quot;cap killer%26quot;... Because yes you are right, if your system cant charge the battery you have and power your system, its really not gonna be able to charge your %26quot;cap killer%26quot;. I am in the same position, and Im just gonna suck it up and get a new alternator...

  • How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?

I need to change my alternator, but my hood wont open. I thought the cable may be broke, but its not. I tried taking the fender off, but I can't, because I have to open the hood for that. I can get it up far enough, to stick my fingers in there and move the latch that %26quot;should%26quot; open the hood. It does nothing though. So its caught on something and I dont know what. It feels like its caught on the latch though. So, now I can't open my hood because I can't get my fender off and I can't get my fender off because I can't open my hood and I can't change my alternator, because I can't do either of the other two things.

Any help, other then completely tearing off my fender or take it to a mechanic that will over-charge me and probably not know what they are doing anyway? How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?
if you are talking about the lever you pull up on under the hood to pop it... that is a secondary latch that just keeps the hood down in case the primary fails, the cable is attached to the primary. You will need to get to the latch assembly not the lever under the hood. I have never dealt with this on a honda (yet) but it happened on my truck and I had to drop the bumper to make room so I could get leverage, my guess is you will have to do the same, the hood does not need to be open to remove the bumper. Once you drop the bumper you can lay down or kneel and reach up with some channel locks or something and pull on the cable AT the latching mechanism. Your bumper should only take about 30 minutes to drop, I dont know the year of your civic but on mine (88-91) all you would have to do is pull the front bumper blinkers and that would reveal the bolts that mount the bumper support on, before you loosen those be sure to remove the screws holding the plastic under fender guards on.

This is my best idea, perhaps you dont need to drop the bumper as long as you can get your arm up there with a tool and can get enough strength to break it loose. Good Luck!!How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?
Try lubricating the latch with a spray lubricant, if you can get your finger in there, then you can get the little straw that attaches to the can in there too. If you're REALLY lucky then it's just stuck due to grit and lack of lubrication. More likely you'll be forced to take it to the mechanic. How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?
Try removing the grille from your car. That will allow access to your hood latch. From there you might be able to pop the latch manually, or remove the latch assembly from the radiator support to allow the hood to open. Good Luck and Merry Christmas! How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?
Your cable may be stretched, and the pull-handle won't go far enough anymore. Grab the cable with a needlenose or something and pull.

    Two questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?

    1) At high speeds (70mph+) the battery light comes on and the headlights dim. Same thing on quick accelerations. Let off the gas and things go back to normal. Has new battery as of last winter. My first thought was the alternator. I replaced it last year as well, but it's a junk yard alternator so you never know. I took it to Advanced Auto to have the charging/starting/battery checked. All came out 100%. Why is the light coming on?

I also changed the neg battery terminal. There was a power cable for an amp/subs on there at one time. That cable has since been removed, but the bigger terminal was still there. I replaced that today with a smaller one.

    2) Where the heck is the tensioner pulley on that car? I see two pulleys that look like it. One is right in the center of the motor, the other in towards the front but down low. The one in the center is impossible to get a socket one because the strut bracket is in the way. The other is down way too low to reach as well. How in the heck do I remove the belt so I can change the alternator if I can't find/loosen the tensioner pulley? Two questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?
Sounds like a belt tensioner problem. Alternator is not that hard to do, I recently had to change mine on my ZX2, its easier to get to the bolts on bottom from underneath on the alternator though. Your problem could be as simple as a new belt is needed. If there is oil leaking on your belt , then that will cause it to slip as well. Here is a diagram of the belt , as they dont put one on the ZX2, and when you remove the belt, its hard to remember as its jammed in there.

and yes, it is impossible to get a socket on there, a open end wrench will do the trick. Two questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?
sounds like the belt may be slipping, the tensioner is hard to access, the real trick to that particular belt replacement is the routing of the belt, make shure you have a diagram or draw a picture or make a mental note it has a funny routeTwo questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?
And yet again marvin beats me to the punch but yes he is right. my 1988 brougham was running fine, all of a sudden the %26quot; no charge%26quot; light came on, everything seems ok, thelights are bright everything works. however i noticed that the radio stopped working and now the car has a tough time cranking over, but it does. i just replaced the alternator 3 months ago, noe when i take the negative cable off the battery, it dies. the parts place where i got the alternator said to check the fuses( i dont know which ones, i dont have the owners manual) check the fuse on the alternator? and check a fusible link? how do i do this and what else do i need to check, where can i get an online list of the fuse block? there is a tech alert about changing this alternator and checking a fuse relating to this light, this is on the autozone parts price list

should i just change the alternator? the belt is new1988 cadillac brougham runs but NO CHARGE light stays on?
Sounds like a bad alternator. If you take the car to autozone or advanced they will check it for free. You can also take the alternator off and have them check it. You may also just have a bad connection when you last changed the alternator. Sometimes they can work themselves loose or a clip on the connector breaks. I would check the connections to the alternator first then pull it off and have it tested. That way you know if it is the alternator or wiring going to the alternator. If you have a big stereo installed then you need to get a higher amp alternator and caps for your stereo amp to keep from burning up the alternator again.1988 cadillac brougham runs but NO CHARGE light stays on?
if alt was a cheap rebuilt all internal parts may not have been changed get it running check voltage output on battrry post should be over 13.6 v1988 cadillac brougham runs but NO CHARGE light stays on?
The fusable link is in your Pos wire from your battery, follow it and you should come to a black heat shrinked area. As for the fuses, here's a link.....http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG

Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???

Looking at buying a '95 Monte Carlo. 3.4L engine. Car has some slight body damage but nothing serious. Alternator is bad and needs to be replaced. Thermostat needs to be replaced and the starter is a little weak. How hard is it to change the alternator on this car??? Are there any major problems with these cars??? Would it be a good buy???Is %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
No... the 3.4 DOHC engine has decent power (think it's about 200) but it's a total lemon. Is %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
was a good car... alternator is not hard to replace but id have it tested first thremostat is not bad either.. depends on the price under a grand maybeIs %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
    Good maybe.

Great, no!Is %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
I have owned a '95 Monte Carlo Z34 for five years, and it now has 143k miles on it. It is lots of fun to drive, but the 3.4L V6 is a pain to work on. The front axle has to be pulled to change the alternator. The intake manifold has to be removed to change the rear spark plugs. I once had an oil leak at a little $1 o-ring, but to change the o-ring, the entire engine had to be pulled. My car has never left me stranded or anything, and I'm not afraid to take it on 4 or 5 hour trips. If the engine needs a lot of work, though, it might not be a good buy unless you are a skilled mechanic, or willing to put a lot of time and effort into it. If I were to sell my car, i would only expect $1500 or $2000 tops, with no mechanical problems or body damage. Is %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
I had a 95 lumina, which is basically the same car. It also had the 3.4L. I never had a problem with the car. It was a very solid and great car. I sold it to a family member. It has over 160,000 miles on it. Still original motor and tranny. Do not I repeat do not listen to Natalia. she is like a Honda and Toyota prostitute! Throwing her trash out there, and hoping someone will buy it. Natalia, come on get real. You and your 35year old toyota and 51year old honda comparisons. Like I have said in the past, show me a 51year old Honda on the road! Until then shut up and go answer all the repair questions on the foreign car categories. There is plenty of them. You and your post are worthless. Is %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
It's a good car, but like most any used car over 10 years old, it has been neglected by it's previous owner and will need some TLC.

Get the work done by a reputable mechanic, or if your capable and have at least some experience, yourself, and you'll have a great car.

Don't listen to Natalia........ Consumer Reports is great for dishwashers and refrigerators, but when it comes to CARS they are COMPLETE dumbasses........... And most TOYOTAS and HONDAS never even make it to 10 years old because they are cheaply built and either 1. they rust away, 2. break a timing belt and trashes the engine, or 3. is involved in a major accident due to broken ball joints.

To the next poster below.......... I replaced the starter in a 94 Cutlass Supreme 3.4 today (basically the same as a Monte Carlo Z34)....... and it's simple. Is %26039;95 Monte Carlo a good car???
I had a ’97 MC for a decade and just traded it in a few months ago. It was a great car for me, but I can tell it went downhill in terms of performance in the last year or so I had it. It had 131,000 miles on it. Maybe I could have driven it a few more years, but with its age and mileage, I was concerned I was going to start having expensive repairs.

Don’t buy this car without having a trusted mechanic look at it. My dad was a mechanic and he did virtually all of my maintenance for the first 8 years I had the car – which I believe is the reason it lasted as long as it did. You won’t know how well this car was cared for if it’s not checked out.

My older brother was a GM mechanic for years, and he frequently complained about how difficult it was to work on mid-90s GM cars because there was so much “junk” (his word) shoved into the steering column. Might be an issue for you with repairing your starter.

That Consumer Reports crap posted above is for the current generation of MCs, not the one you’re asking about.
