How I can find the difference between a 1999 Ford Escort zx2 1.9L and 1.8L Engine?

I am trying to change my alternator and I can't seem to find anywhere on the engine where it says 1.9L or 1.8L, it makes a difference in how I'm suppose to go about fixing the alternator. How I can find the difference between a 1999 Ford Escort zx2 1.9L and 1.8L Engine?
I don't think a 1999 ZX2 came with either engine. The 1.9L engine is a Ford engine that was used in Escorts model years up 1996. The 1.8L engine is actually a Mazda engine used only in the Escort GTs of that era. If it's a 1999 ZX2, it should be equipped with a 2.0L Zetec VCT engine. I wouldn't recommend attempting to change the alternator on that particular car yourself, unless you are fairly skilled, as it is very difficult to access on that particular model. Hope this helps.

  • Change a 1998 FORD TAURUS WAGON Alternator?

I have a 1998 Ford Taurus SE Comfort Station Wagon that needs a new Alternator. I know nothing about cars but am very good at following directions. Is there a website (maybe w/ pictures) that can give me step by step instructions on how to change out an Alternator. Also what tools would I need?

The engine type is: 3.0L V6 PFI 24V.Change a 1998 FORD TAURUS WAGON Alternator?
Here is a step by step insructions for this job, as far as tools you will need a set of metric wrenches, 3/8 %26amp; 1/4 in drive socket set, a jack and jack stands, lug wrench and other basic tools such as pliers and screwdrivers. I would like to give you some advice, unless you work on cars quite frequently have a mechanic install your alternator, the 24v Taurus is kind of tough to put an alternator on.

Do i need a new alternator and battery? what about wire?

I have a 2000 Ford explorer XLT and i have a 4000.1 amplifier hooked up to a RE audio xxx 12%26quot; subwoofer that is in a sealed. I currently have a pretty close to stock battery and also have another generic battery in the back. i am running the whole thing on about 5 gauge wire.

here are my questions and thanks again for the help!!!

what size wire should i run to power this setup?

    do i need to add/change another battery(s)?

do i need to change the alternator to a HO?

How/where do i find a place that will show me how to do the big 3 upgrade?

thanks again for the help!!!!Do i need a new alternator and battery? what about wire?
you do not say what brand amplifier you have but I am going to say that it doesn't put out anywhere near 4000 watts. if it did your amplifier would shut down from low voltage every time the bass hit. a true 4000 watts rms would probably set a 5 gauge wire on fire.

a 4000 watts rms amplifier would require two runs of 0 gauge wire, an H.O. alternator, 2 car audio style batteries and the big 3 as a minimum .

post the brand and model number of your amplifier and I could tell you more.

go to youtube and search for 'the big 3 ' . their are several videos to help you.

    Alternator or Battery issue?

Hello All, I tried starting my car last week and it wouldn't start. Car battery was 3 years old and i saw green deposits on the top. I tried jump starting the car (connected to the other car for more than 5 to 6 minutes) and still it wouldn't start. Whenever I started my car, the battery red indicator on the dashboard came on . The indicator was blinking yellow before jump starting, but then the yellow blinking went away after charging for 5 to 6 minutes (during jump start).

Changed the battery and cleaned the cables and it ran fine for 2 days. Today, it wouldn't start again.

    1. Please let me know if the problem is with the battery or alternator or any other part?

    2. How much does it cost to change the alternator (or if there is any other broken part)?

    3. In this hard economic time, I wouldn't be able to spend a lot of money. Sp please let me know the cheapest place where I could take it to fix it or could I do this myself?

    Appreciate your answers!!

Car is 95 Honda accord - 4cylinder.Alternator or Battery issue?
if it ran fine for 2 days and then wouldnt start again its a good possibility its the alt. take it to autozone or oriellys and they will check the alt for you free of charge and tell you if its bad or not. they can check it while on the car too.Alternator or Battery issue?
well when the battery gets low on power, your alternator is forced to work extra hard. so i would recommend replacing both. i would go to the junkyard and pull an alternator and install it on your car or go on craigslist and search for one. there are tons of honda parts on there for cheap. you could also look on there for a battery. but you'll probably have to go to an auto shop for that.Alternator or Battery issue?
I'd guess it's your battery that's shot, not your alternator. The easiest way to tell would be to get a multimeter and measure the output of the battery vs alternator. If while running the car gives an output of around 14 volts, the alternator is fine.

A battery (depending on quality an brand) will run anywhere from 60-150 bucks depending on what you get.

If you go to Autozone or any other major parts store or garage chain they will usually be more than happy to test your battery and alternator for you for free if you don't have a multimeter.

Another option is to start the car, and while it's running remove the negative battery cable terminal from the battery. If the car continues to run, your alternator is fine.

bottom line, i fyour car ran for several days on a charge, you're alternator is most likely fine. It's much more likely that the battery is just no good or your electrical system may have a slow drain on it that you need to repair.Alternator or Battery issue?
If your alternator is bad, you would see some problems after running it for a while, the alternator recharges your battery as well as run your electrical system while the motor is running...so if your alternator was bad, your motor would run until your ignition system used all the energy left in the battery.

You should be able to change out the alternator yourself, shouldn't cost more that $100 for a new one. Also: make sure all of your grounds are in good conditionAlternator or Battery issue?
Remove the battery, give it a full charge, have it tested by somewhere you trust.

If you need a battery, you'll know it right there.

This is a good place to start. If you want, and can ? remove

the alternator and have that tested.

Because of the cold weather approaching, I would imagine it is

your battery, but there are many, many variables here. It could

    be a combination of components.

So eliminate the possibilites what you can first.

    Good Luck to You...

Try to work with one place on this issue rather than run here and there for the best battery price.

ie. A Local Trusted Autozone ? or Auto Parts Store.

Make sure you have the battery charged, then tested.Alternator or Battery issue?
A voltmeter and some basic charging system knowledge can help to diagnose your problem. I'm not going to spell it out for you. You can help yourself through this hard economic time by doing some homework.Alternator or Battery issue?
What happens when you try and start the car?

New alternator problem or something else?

I just changed the alternator on my 2003 Escape, (w/ help o a friend en his tools) I still have some power Issues, w/ AC and Light on, I can see how the panel lights dime, and the AC temperature drops and fan slow down. If I push the gas it goes back to normal, but on the highway The Ac fails the same way. even if I push the gas.

Is there something else to check beside the alternator? any voltage regulator box or something? I bough the recommended alternator from checkers. could it be a faulty alternator? how can I test it? I'm getting:

    car off --- 12v

car on, no accesories, --- 13.5v to 14v

car on w/ AC, Hi Beams and stereo --- 13v

car on w/ AC, Hi Beams stereo and radiator Fan, 11V

when the fan turned off voltage went slowly back to 13v

there was no change on the voltage by increasing the RPM.New alternator problem or something else?
It might be a problem with your battery holding a charge sometime an alternator going bad can over charge the battery if you want to check the alternator take it to your local auto zone they will test it for free.New alternator problem or something else?
Have you an automatic tensioner on the belt. It could be bad, if you do not maybe your belt is too loose. try tightening it a little.New alternator problem or something else?
sounds like the voltage regulator but most are in the alternator. the place where you bought it can check it for you . also check if you fan belt is loose . that sounds more why it does that than the alternator cause like i said the voltage regulator is in the alternator usually but go back and have it checked after you check the fan belt firstNew alternator problem or something else?
If you are reading 12V across your battery terminals with the engine stopped that is low. You should be reading 12.6V or higher. Your alternator is doing it's job with the 13.5-14V at idle. Have your battery checked. If you need a new battery get it at the same place if it's still under warranty. They pro-rate the warranties. I just bought one and got $25 toward a new one. Good luck.

    Appreciate your answers!!Alternator or Battery?
Clean up the terminals on the battery cables. Have the battery charged and checked at your mechanics shop. Put the battery back in the car, start it up, then connect a voltage meter to the battery. It should show from 11 to 12 volts before you start it. After you start the car,the voltage meter should show almost 14volts. If it doesn't move after you started it, the alternator needs checking. With the care shut off, the voltage meter should not show any loss of voltage. If it does, you need a new battery.Alternator or Battery?
first thing is clean battery cables

jump start it an ddrive to any parts store or shop ask them to check charging system then you know for sure not reason to replace anything til you know for sure that wil save you money check belt clean cables jump start it then have it check smarter cheaper way than guessing buying what you dont need cost youAlternator or Battery?
if the light is on whin the car is runing its the alterator but if the battery is over 3 years old i would change it tooAlternator or Battery?
Hi: Step 1) take the battery out and have it tested at pep boys or some other car parts place. Most of them will test it for free.

If it fails replace the battery.

if the battery passes the test then it is the alternator.

    New battery about 100 bucks

new alternator, not much more, depending on the year, make and model of car.

Very easy to replace either one your self.

    russAlternator or Battery?
Disconnect the battery cables and clean them thoroughly. Reconnect them and jump start again if necessary. Drive the car for 20-30 min and see if it will re-start. If it still fails to start then buy a new battery. Always go with the cheapest fixes first.Alternator or Battery?
replace the battery and clean the battery terminals then tell me year, make and model and engine sizeAlternator or Battery?
that green stuff you see on the battery posts? get it off, that,s corrode and the alternator can,t keep your battery charged with that stuff on it. take the terminals off, clean them good and make sure they are tight. by the way after you get them clean put a little bit of grease on them, it will help keep the acid away.Alternator or Battery?
It's definitely your battery. If it doesn't start after jumping then it's gone. Get one at Walmart or Pep Boys or some large store. Use a small 1/2%26quot; socket wrench or open end wrench to undo the cable clamps and just drop the new battery in.

Alternators are pretty expensive, from $200-800.Alternator or Battery?
    1. if the battery had corrosion on the terminals, clean the terminals. the most likely cause is the battery.

2 replace the battery always first if it is a dead cell it will cause the alternator to struggle to charge a battery that is completely dead.

    3. use a voltage meter and postive lead to the battery pos and neg to the battery neg , if you see 14 volts while the car is running the alternator is charging.

4 alternaotrs are not that hard to change but you may need a hoist.

    5. your best bet for economic reasons is to change it yourself and go from there.

Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?

can anyone help me with instructions to change an alternator on this car. How do I remove the drive belt, and how do I tension the alternator. Details please. Thank you for any help. Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?
Im assuming the astra is either mk2mk3 or mk 4. In these cases it is all very similar.

    Firstly disconnect the battery,

Now look down at the alternator, there will be a 13mm nut and bolt running at the top of the alternator joining it to the mounting bracket, slacken this off.

There is also a 13mm bolt holding the bottom of the alternator, undo this and the whole unit will pivot allowing you to remove the belt, Refitting of the belt requires the alternator to be prised into tension using a suitable bar.

To remove completley, remove the two pre mentioned bolts, u can now turn the alternator enough to remove the 13mm live nut from the back, and also the 10mm battery warning feed. Refitting is just a simple reversal.

Hope this helps. Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?
Normally a bolt on the alternator adjusts the belt tension, and another bolt acts as the pivot. Removing those bolts will let you remove the alternator and belt. Can anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?
haynes book at local library free will tell u howCan anyone help me with a vauxhall astra?
    Excellent advice from Sophi B!

In addition to this, when tensioning the belt check that you've got 10mm free play at the longest run before tightening the bolts.

So I changed the starter and eventually that did help but i also had to change my alternator because it was bad so I change it today. Then I turn on my car and everything was working well except the stereo. So why is the stereo not working? How come my car sterero wont turn on?
    check the fuse if not.........

well chances are you didnt need to replace any of those things. or at least they have little to do with the radio problem. i have delt with many of these things at the dealership i work at.

go on all data.com under wirediagrams find the one that will run to the point you need. then comes the hell. oh it will cost about 15$ i believe to print but you can just take a photosnap on your computer to avoid that. then youll need a cheap dvom. you need to trace all the wireing from your powersource tho you radio terminal. some were along the rout of flow the power is grounding out. you may need to soder some new wires.

also check weather the radio itself functions properly.

I don't know if the shop you took it to was a dealership (it does not sound like it was) but I would carry the car to a dealer and get his opinion. I have worked on many cars I have never had a need to replace the cable between the alternator and junction block and I don't know how this cable is installed in your car but I can't see it costing him $400.00 to fix or $80.00 if you do it. If he is just replacing the one wire it should not cost that much and if he is planning on replacing a complete harness it would probably be even more. I would take it to the dealership if I could not fix it myself. How to change the cable from alternator to junction box?

Need help with Toyota Celica GT....?

I have a 1990 Toyota Celica GT. Five months ago battery light came on and had draining of headlight power. Changed alternator (used) all was good for about two weeks. Same problem happened had alt checked and it was bad so had another alternator put in (used) ran good for two months. Now, the battery light will flicker on and off now and then when driving my car. Don't notice the lights diming yet....could I have a short or something....if so any idea how to check it...Cheap...Any ideas very much appreciated! Thank you!Need help with Toyota Celica GT....?
You can check the system for a draw on the system but if it had a draw you would have a dead battery.

First and again check the alternator again and make sure it is providing the proper amount of power.

When you say used I hope you mean refurbish. Used alternators would fail like this and the problem is your buying junk.

After testing the alternator you will need to test the battery. They can do this at the auto parts store. Your battery can be damaged from dramatic temp changes or from being drained. If its damamged it may not be getting a complete charge.

If you have a short it will take more than luck to find it and you will need to get someone who knows what they are doing.

Is your car over head valve or OHC. Is the engine strait or %26quot;V%26quot; (V6, V8) configuration... If your are lucky, the car (truck) is strait over head valve. then it will be as simple as removing the exhaust manifild, gas lines maybe some wire conections, vacume hoses and valve cover then you may unbolt the head take it to a machine shop and have it checked/surfaced. You will need to clean all the antifreeze out of the cylinders and clean the block maiting surface. You need info on head torque specs and tightning patern. If the care is newer and %26quot;V%26quot; config and OHC you have to remove the vally (intake manifold) and two exhaust manifolds plus timing chains/belts on %26quot;V%26quot; configs you need do BOTH heads. I would recomend you take it to a mechanic, because this can get hairy for a light weight and some one with a full set of teeth ;-)

  • Car problems...dead battery..new battery+alternator?

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima GLE. Brand new alternator and battery. I haven't start it for like 3 weeks, because I was low on gas and it would of ran out. I was waiting until this Friday since payday. My battery is completely dead, so before I go to Auto Zone and get it charged I had some questions. (Most workers at my local Auto Zone don't know much)

When I got my alternator changed at my friends shop, they did a charging system test and no problems.

Why would my battery be dead if its new along with the alternator? It shouldn't be if it hasn't been started in a few weeks.

My roommate told me it's probably a grounding problem. How much would that cost to be repaired?(estimate)

I have no idea what is going on, but it is annoying once I need to go somewhere, I can't. Please help, thanks!Car problems...dead battery..new battery+alternator?
Do you have any aftermarket electronic accessories? Radio, remote starter, fog lights, etc.? It's also possible that a wire has become loose/chaffed or an electronic device is malfunctioning and causing a draw on the battery 24/7 which eventually just kills the battery.

Have you added anything electrical lately other than the battery and alternator? If so I would suggest you recharge the battery and take the fuse out of the new device and see if it continues to drain your battery.

Electrical problems can be a pain to diagnose if you are not comfortable or familiar with wiring and electronics. Hopefully it's as simple as an interior light was accidentally left on. Don't forget to check to make sure your dome light isn't on, check your main light switch.Car problems...dead battery..new battery+alternator?
If you say the battery is completely dead with not even enough energy to light the lights and it was a new fully charged battery, that just sat in the car for three weeks. You have a parasitic ground, which means something was left on. Or else the main fuse is blown.

How do you pick out an alternator ?

I have a Honda Accord 96. My electrician says the alternator has gone bad. Of course I don't wholly agree. How do you really know that the alternator needs changing? Is it ideal to get an alternator that closely matches the amperage of the battery? I've heard of %26quot;power%26quot; alternators that do 150 amps to 170 amps, are they really better? My lights are HID, I also have a sound system with an amplifier but without a subwoofer. Thanks !How do you pick out an alternator ?
The ONLY way to test an alternator is to have a charging system test performed where a controlled load is applied to the electrical system and the alternator output amperage and voltage is measured. Also have the battery load tested to check it's condition, but the one thing that must be know about a battery test is that the battery must be fully charged or it will fail the test. Get a replacment alternator that is the same as the one that came off of the car.How do you pick out an alternator ?
have your car running...remove the ( - ) negative cable that is connected to the battery while leaving the positive + plugged in to the battery. If the car stalls then the alternator has gone bad.If it continues to run then it is fine.If you need one then simply know your cars motor information, make, model and year when picking one up.

Do not take car advice from an electrician when it comes to your car! What does his career have to do with cars????

Call a mechanic and ask if maybe you need to replace your battery with one that puts out more cranking amps. How do you pick out an alternator ?
your sound system probably burnt out you alt.,you need to upgrade to higher amp's output alt.some auto parts stores will check your alt. for freeHow do you pick out an alternator ?
never disconnect the battery cable on a car with electronics when the engine is running. it can cause a power surge when you plug it back up and burn a sensor or computer. How do you pick out an alternator ?
The ONLY way is to get it tested. A cheap test is to get a volt meter and see what the voltage is when running. First, get the voltage of the batter before running. It might be 12-12.5V. With the engine running, it should be between 13.5-14.5V. Most alternators should be at that area when running..... any lower, it might show a problem.

If you don't have an volt meter, go to your local auto parts store. I know that Autozone can test them in the car while Schucks, you have to remove it. Testing is the only way to know.

Alright, I don't know how many amps your current one is. But I do know, the battery plays a big role in electrical accessories. Buy yourself a good HD batter. My suggestion is an Optima battery...a Yellow top. They can take the 'abuse' of a sound system (depending on how BIG it is).

Upgrade alternators are available for just about anything. Usually a good parts place will list higher amp ones in the catalog or comptuer. If not, fine a local shop (small one) that deals with starters and alternators. They'll able to hook you up with what you need.

I have a 98 sentra how difficult is it to change out the alternator myself?

    fairly easy process:

    1) get the reapir manual at your local autoparts store or bookstore. It will clearly instruct you with photos and step by step instruction.

    2) Make sure you have a few tools (sockets, screwdrivers, a broomstick for leverage).

    3) buy the ne alternator, new belt, and new wiring if necessary.

    4) get a few beers and crank up some skynard dude!

Should I file a law suite against BMW dealer?

I'm having a major problem with my 525 BMW 2003, the battery died over a year ago, I had no idea it was the battery because I was having other problems, my mechanic and I thought it was the transmission, car had to be towed to dealer to be diagnosed, come to find out it was the battery, dealer never said that was the only problem and ended up just installing a new one $379.00 later I take the car, a year later same problem, battery dies, turns out car has a draw, drainnig battery, took to another dealer Crevier in Orange County CA, said can't replace battery unless they fix that problem causing draw, another $389 dls later, a monthe goes by and again my car dies because now it needs a new alternator, wasnt told by dealer. A reputable mechanic finds that dealer (no one else had touched the car) left fan off (unscrewed) from radiator, radiator leaks all over, now since 3 weeks ago, did the dealer leave this undone by accident? I saw the fan sitting there, with my own eyes, as the mechanic was going to change alternator, please help!

Don't know how to approach dealer on this........... Should I file a law suite against BMW dealer?
The first battery replacement seems okay. The draw could have come at any time and the fact that the battery lasted a year tells me it was not the original problem and probably happensd after the replacement. The fact that they fixed the draw before replacing the 2nd battery is good. The draw could also link to the failure of the alternator, so that is probably apart of the same problem. The fan being left off is a problem. I'm not sure how that causes a leak though. You will need to talk to the dealer who left the fan off to at least give them the opportunity to remedy the error. Did they take off the fan to replace the alternator. If it was their error, they will probably take care of it for you! Should I file a law suite against BMW dealer?

You're right, some don't have a clue. Mainly you. A radiator fan isn't even used during normal operation of your vehicle unless you're ALREADY overheating. You had a problem before the fan was removed. Get a clue about cars.

Do you actually care about your car?

Because it really doesn't seem like you do.

You have all these problems with your car, but fail to inspect the car, after each repair.

You have multiple battery problems, but you don't have them go through the whole car, to find the problem.

And it doesn't seem like you're getting a warranty, because you keep paying for more repairs. If you had a warranty, they'd be free fixes.

I may be wrong, but these are the facts that I'm getting from your description of the the situation.

Plus, keep in mind something about mechanics. If you say your car is dead, and we check your battery, and the battery is dead, that's what we're going to say is the problem. We're not going to go through the whole car, because of one fault. Now, if more symptoms appear, we know to look for more causes. But until that happens, we treat what we see.

Also, taking an entire year for your battery to go dead again? Come on. If you had a serious problem, it'd be dead at the end of the week. Most batteries have replacement warrantys for two years, because that's all they're expected to last anyway. So, maybe you do have a small drain somewhere. But it's so insignificant, that it's barely worth complaining about.

Sounds like you just need to take your car in, have the whole thing gone through, if you really are freaking out about it, spend about $2000, and get it properly serviced.Should I file a law suite against BMW dealer?
the process of going through a lawsuit for such a small claim is not worth it.

I think you should have switch to a different mechanic back then. Should I file a law suite against BMW dealer?
Well cars to old and I don't see a judgment in your favor or any real money coming to you. This is becasue your story did not make much sence. The part about the fan being left off and the radiator leaking does not jive. I think your not telling the story right or not the whole story.

Just count your lucky starts you made it this long with a BMW of that year a lot of them have much more serious problems running around.

    Battery light camry-what's causing it/?

have a battery -mostly while driving on the freeway but on also comes on at random times on street. It's a 95 toyota camry with 170k miles. Light comes on simultaneously with brake lamp light (icon is that of car with two rear lights radiating). The battery tested poor and I replaced -but the dash light behavior didn't change. Alternator tests as good while in car. I also run a wire from the +ve battery terminal to to the car cabin and monitor the voltage on my multimeter (grounded on cigarette lighter) while I drive -it's measures around about 13.5 V before starting engine then goes to ~14.55 V (very little fluctuation ~+/- 0.04 V) once the engine is started and idle, and goes up to ~14.70 V on the freeway (~14.67 when AC etc turned on). I look at the reading when the battery light comes on but it consistently measures ~14.7 V!

Aside: I took out the alternator for bench testing at Autozone before changing the battery -Autozone machine failed the alternator on all three aspects in test (including diode, etc) -but I question the reliability of the machine as it basically says my alternator is %26quot;dead%26quot; i.e. fails ALL tests yet it my car works on 14.7 volts! AND passes Autozone in car alternator test! (Was about to buy a new alternator from autozone from Autozone when I decided to let them test the new first on the same machine-but new alternator also %26quot;failed%26quot; the bench test-this makes me believe something is wrong with the bench testing!)

Anyway, I with figuring the lights: brand new 750 CCA battery, alternator producing spec voltage even while battery light on. If the it's the sensor problem or grounding how do I proceed? Could it still be a diode malfunction? What would the voltage be like a just one or more diodes in the rectifier malfunction? Help!Battery light camry-what%26039;s causing it/?
If it's happening mostly while you are driving you may want to think about checking for a loose wire. It is possible and I've seen things like this happen that you hit a bump and your ground (ground wire) is effected. Check for a loose, burned, corroded wire.

    90 honda prelude?

how to change alternator and which bolt loosens the belt90 honda prelude?
I own a 91 lude and just changed my drive belts this week. It's different than a 90-93 accord, the accord has 2 adusters and the lude only has 1.

First disconnect the battery negative cable and remove the 2 connections at the alternator just to be safe.

remove the 2 12mm bolts on the p/s pump. One is visible and the other is behind the pulley, you will need patience and a wrench for this one.

After the bolts are out drop down the pump and remove the belt, you will have to twist it a little to get it around the crankshaft pulley. With a rag remove the hose from pump, fluid will leak out a little so be careful not to get it into the alternator. Set the pump on the valve cover.

You will now see a 14mm bolt, this is the pivot bolt. Loosen it, you dont have to remove it completely, but just enough to so that the alternator will be able to swing down later.

Now get a 12%26quot; extension and under the alternator on the left side will be an adjuster bolt. Loosen this bolt, but do not remove it, it will be a pain to put back in if it is taken out.

After this bolt is loose, look at the front of the alternator, near the bottom is a stud with a 12mm nut on it, loosen the nut and the alternator will be able to drop. Loosen it so that you are able to drop the alternator enough to remove the belt.

Remove and replace the belt and do the opposite of removal. Make sure that the new belt is on tight. It should have little deflection. Since it is new it will stretch and tension should be checked 15 minutes after driving. Make adjustments if necessary.90 honda prelude?
i have a 93 and you have to remove the power steering pump and the bolt to do that is one of the alternator bolts. there are two tension bolts on the front...make sure they are both loose. then there is a swing arm bolt that you have to take outthe bolt, but make sure you keep track of the bolt and nothing happens to it cause it will cost you around 16 buck to replace. the alternator just comes right out. to get to a couple of the bolts you might have to take the heat shield off the exhaust manifold. the alternator just slide in the braket and bolts up the exact same way it came out......good luck!

    Replacing an alternator 3 times?

I'm looking at buying a 2001 VW beetle...The sales guy said it had the alternator replaced and then recently they had to replace it with another one because he said it was a %26quot;bad alternator%26quot;. How does this effect future auto problems, meaning does this constant alternator changing signal an electrical problem? I'm trying to avoid getting ripped off here.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
Just asked my husband who is a mechanic, and he said not to buy the car, because there could be a major problem in the wiring.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
either crappy parts or the battery still has a fault

crappy mechanics most likelyReplacing an alternator 3 times?
First with Electrical, The Charging System, Take it to a shop and inspect it. They check the battery first by load testing it. Then the charging system and wiring. Try that first. Don't go to a parts dealer, They aren't a mechanic.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
VW's are noted for electrical problems,it sounds fishy to me,personally I wouldn't buy it as parts are very expensive.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
i had to replace mine 3 time in 2 months six years ago and have not had a problem yet and now the truck has over 210,000 miles. some times they are just bad.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
a lot of times the problem isn't the altenator. it sometimes can be one of these things. 1 if battery is not holding a charge then it can hurt the alternator, 2 if the starter is going bad it can hurt the battery then in turn hurt the alternator.

the best thing to do is take it to a local Kwick Kar lube and pay them to check it out. they won't charge much. tell them the problem. also ask the sales guy what kind of alternator they replaced it with. sometimes if you use junk parts or parts from local auto parts store then they are rebuilt junk... ask for the paper work on the alternator so if it dies again you can get one for free.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
Unfortunately, modern VW cars do not have a good repair rating from buyers. Seems they just can't make them as sturdy as the originals from 60s and 70's.

I would stay away from this specific Beetle. If they had to replace alternator couple times in such short time, yes, there is probably a short or electrical problem with it. But that doesn't mean that others will be that way. I wouldn't believe the car salesman about a %26quot;bad alternator%26quot; because it's more likely an electrical problem. It's always possible that it's a true story, a bad new alternator, but don't take the chance. You might end up having to pay for another new alternator and they're not cheap. Like many others here, I suggest looking for different Beetle.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
If you are buying it from a VW dealer, it's likely they properly diagnosed the problem and replaced the faulty alternator. if not, either find something else or take it to a VW dealer for diagnostics. it will cost a little, but a lot less than repeated alternator failures. Try to work the cost into your purchase deal,if it passes you pay,if not the dealer pays for the diagnostics and repair. I say to use a VW dealer because they are trained in that particular system, and work on VW's almost exclusively

they see this problem regularly.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
that don,t mean nothing. maybe the other alternator was,nt very good so they changed it. that don,t mean you will have to change it.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
Sounds like an electrical issue. If I were you, and I have worked in the auto field everyday for 25 years, do not buy the newer beetles, they are nothing but a money pit.Replacing an alternator 3 times?
a bad battery will put a constant load on the alternator %26amp; kill it.

But VW had alot of electrical problems around those years.

you can get a report on these electrical problems from VW (free)

by the way how does this salesman know that it was a bad alternator

i'm sure he has documentation !

i have a hunch your rightReplacing an alternator 3 times?
german cars are known for faulty electrical systems. one alternator is expected but three in a row, i suspect that the problem is not with the alternator only. you do indeed have an electrical problem.

sounds so simple....i've done something similar...if you don't have money for, or just can't find another plug, try....Electrical tape, the black stretchy stuff..it will wrap around and stretch tight to hold the little plug end in place

My simple repair has lasted for years...hope it worksAnyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
    go get another plug.

    and solder it in.......

do it the right way once!

and never have to do it againAnyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
Above post is correct. Buy a new end plug, they're cheap enough. Put about 5 minutes of labour into it and you won't have to worry about it again.Anyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
you can replace the plug on it most parts stores carry these on their help line of automotive parts, that's a common problem for those to break off,you might be able to use some sort of glue or silicone on it but it would be just as easy to replace it and be done with it,this way you don't have to worry about it coming off, good luck on it,

You cant see the timing belt. Its behind the front cover. If you are referring to the drive belts, I would replace them if they are in need of changing. The timing belt is a bigger job, should be changed every 90k I believe every car differs though.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
I have seldom worked on any hondas, however, the use of underdrive pulleys is old hat in hot rodding. You will undoubtably have to change length of your belt on an accessory drive, but I question your use of an underdrive pulley as being related to a timing belt. Unless both pulleys for crank and cam are changed, it would not be possible for them to stay in time, and changing them both would have no purpose as far as power gain. If I have misunderstood your question, please pardon my interuption. If you are changing an accessory drive that is actually driven from the timing belt(is that actually done on hondas?) then there may be a small change in length, all dependent upon difference of the two diameters and how many degrees of the pulley circle it contacts. Using pi (3.14) times change in diameter divided by the fraction of degrees contacting the pulley should give you the difference in length.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
You shouldnt have to mess with the timing chain, but you will have to take off the accessory belts (A/C, power steering, alternator) when changing out the pulley. I would advise you to change the belts if it is necessary, but if your alternator is in working order then dont mess with it. Dont fix what isnt broken.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
No you shouldnt have to unless it says so when you get the pulley, u should just need a new belt, they should provide it.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
your timing belt replacement is an advanced project and you dont need to do it yourself (leave it to the pros). it is easy to change the pullies. just get or rent or find a clicker torq wrench. but it isnt needed. you should get a friend who will help. it will be more fun with an extra set of hands. it shouldnt take you very long and its a good upgrade. good luck and have fun! get any performance parts off the %26quot;bay%26quot; they will be half price...

Battery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.

Had both battery and alternator re-tested. Can't understand why the battery keeps running down in 30 minutes. Autozone said it may be the cable from battery to alternator. Autozone does not sell them. Where can this be found and how much?

What could be the problem. Need cost estimate.

Just had intake manifold and timing fixedBattery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.
YOU NEED A BATTERY. If it's only showing 10 volts then you dropped a cell because it's a 12 volt battery.

In other words. The inside of a car battery is actually 6-2 volt battery's in a row. So one of the 6-2 volt battery cells is junk. So now the total battery output is only 10 volts instead of 12 so the whole battery is now junk.

Sometimes like right after a jump start or charge the bad cell will pop back to life but then go dead again while sitting. That is why it may have passed the test at Autozone. Then, on the ride home the bad 2 volt cell drops again.

Battery's do wierd stuff.Battery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.
I do believe this is the cable from the battery to the alternator or from the battery to your starter. Check at a Carquest if you have one local. they should have it if not check at a chevy dealership they are bound to have it in stock. It should run you around 20 bucks.Battery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.
FrankieC has it and I don't think the person at autozone was much help if after a charge you only get 10 volts because a good battery will read 12.4 to 12.6 volts. You need a new battery. Then again you replaced the alternator and if it wasn't the correct one it may not charge the battery back up but I still say a new battery because of the voltage reading you are getting.

  • How do you change the primary battery fuse on 1998 f150?

I changed my alternator only after 1 1/2 years of replacing it. When I put in the new one, the battery was not being charged. The guys at Advanced Auto asked me if it was a Ford. I said yes, and he told me that I could have blown the fuse. If it is the Primary battery fuse, how do I know if it is blown?? Please help, I can't drive it anywhere to have someone do it.How do you change the primary battery fuse on 1998 f150?
Okay, the last time I checked, that fuse would be in a box INSIDE of the engine compartment. Look near the battery first off. There should be a black box right next to it with white lettering on it. Those are the big fuses. Once opened, there will be a list of which fuse is for what thing. Remove the fuse and go get the new one. Remember to use di-electric grease when re-installing the fuse so to make a better power connection as well as easier installation and removal if necessary. How do you change the primary battery fuse on 1998 f150?
Follow the main battery wire from the alternator back to the battery.. it will go under a cover on the passenger side before it heads to the battery.. under that cover (depending upon the year, there may be two.. a outer cover and a smaller cover where you psycially see the wires going in and out of that is taped) is a 175 amp fuse... it's about a $10 fuse... it's bolted in and removal of the battery cables to replace is neccesary

There are also a fuse from the dash to the alternator.. if that fuse is blown, it will cause same headaches...

Third thing is, I've had bad luck with some aftermarket alternators causing alternator light to stay on even as it is charging the battery among other things...

Check your fuses... then check the alternator.

How can I tell if it's my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?

My car (1997 Mustang) has been taking longer and longer to turn over recently. Last night, the battery died on me while I was in the store. The lights weren't on, but the battery acted like the lights had been on the whole time. I had to get my car jump-started, and it took three tries and a couple minutes charging before it would actually start. After I left my car running for about 30 minutes or so (and the battery indicator was in the middle), I turned the car off. I tried to turn it back on immediately, because the battery indicator fell down to zero, and it almost didn't turn over. (It did turn on, though.)

I haven't tried to start it yet today, so I'm not sure if I'll have the same problem or not...

Will changing my battery solve the problem? Or am I going to need to change the alternator?

FYI - I bought the car (used) in July 2007 and haven't had to change the battery. I'm not sure how long it's been in the car (unfortunately, the dealer I got it from may very well have not changed it at all, either...). I haven't had to change the alternator yet, either.

Auto Zone, or Advanced Auto Parts, and probably many others will test both battery and alternater for free. How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
Try taking your to an automotive store like NAPA or Checkers where they can troubleshoot the battery and charging system.. possibly for free. Good luck! How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
does ur battery indicator turn on when ur engine runs? if it is, i guess it's ur alternator problem... cos it's not charging the battery...How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
Take your car to Autozone, Checker, NAPA, Pep Boys, etc., and they can do a test to determine which part needs replacing.

How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
If it's your battery your car will not start no matter what. If it's your alternator your car may start again after waiting a little while. It happened to me once. My car died on the hi-way and I had it towed to a garage and about 1/2 an hour later it started up again. It ended up being my alternater. A battery will only start up again if it gets a boost. How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
Most likely, if your continues to run after you get it started, your altrnator is good, check the battery terminals for corrosion. Or for $80 get a new battery and some piece of mind. How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
It's actually most common for the battery terminals to just need cleaning. If you take your car to any reputable parts store they will check your battery for free (this is the second most common, by far) if your terminals are clean and your battery is good, guess what - chances are real good that it's your alternator and they're not real expensive either. How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
Its your battery if it ran after getting a boost, charging a dead or nearly dead battery will not solve the problem. You need a new battery. How can I tell if it%26039;s my battery or alternator that needs to be replaced?
Well if the engine sounds like it has been choking in the beginning in startup i would say its your alternator. But if your engine doesnt turn on at all I would say its your battery. Maybe you have a loose conection with the cables that touch the battery. Try opening the tops of the battery if it uses water make sure that the bottom of the battery has water in it. Make sure if you do this you put distilled water in it. If you get your car working you can go to autozone and have them check your battery for free. Good luck.

How do I remove the alternator fuse on a 2007 Toyota Camry?

I was changing the alternator out on my 07 Camry 4 cylinder when the output wire from the alternator shorted out against the engine causing my car to not start. The Alt fuse is a large fuse that is bolted into the fuse box, you have to remove the fuse box turn it over take off the cover to access the screws that hold the fuse in.

I have seen this happen before, also will blow the fuse if you hook up the battery backwards. How do I remove the alternator fuse on a 2007 Toyota Camry?

Question about whether to change/rebuild alternator?

Hello, in my 100,000 mile Camaro my battery failed on me.

Replaced battery and now seems fine. The on dash voltmeter reads above 13V

The mechanic said when he tested it that his instrument showed that the needle was going a little back and forth. he told me that the battery wasn't holding a full charge.

    ----

my question is that isn't it normal for the needle to move around a bit as long as it stays above 13V. I spent 120.00 on the battery and cant afford 240.00 plus for an alternator. I said how long can the car last and he says I don't know that answer. Since the cra is working now and the voltmeter reads 13V and more isn't this ok????Question about whether to change/rebuild alternator?
perfectly normalQuestion about whether to change/rebuild alternator?
Well the 1st thing you pay too much for you parts. A used alternator is just as good for like $30Question about whether to change/rebuild alternator?
Sounds_like a voltage regulator on the alternator,sooo..you'll replace the alternator if required by a another shop for less and IF the regulator is easy to get to,it'll be fast and cheaper.Thats it

I can't give you specifics on changing that alternator, but, I don't think it will be too difficult. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you EVER disconnect the battery on a running engine. The alternator puts out 17 or so volts and if it's working it will fry your ignition system. Way back before electronic ignitions you could do this to check an alternator, but NOT now.

Okay, you have a serpentine belt I assume. There is a bolt on one of your pulley's center's.

You find the right socket or wrench size. This takes some ELBOW GREASE you put that socket on and PULL with one hand, then be sure you hold that **** because you can snap your finger into pieces. NOT to scare you.Pull that belt away and CLEARLY off of the pulley and THEN AND ONLY THEN YOU can let go of that wrench with your other hand. Very simple and if you have questions email me. I dont want you to loose your fingers. Im not shouting at you.

If the alternator is right up near the top of the engine, it should be an easy job, but you have to disconnect the battery cables before you start the job, and you may need a helping hand when you tighten the fan belt. Make sure you get the right part number for your engine, because some alternators are computer controlled and some are not, even for the same model vehicle sometimes. Also make sure your battery is good and charged up before using the new alternator. How hard is changing an alternator on a %26039;97 Ford Ranger?
What size engine does the truck have (2.3L, 3.0L, or 4.0L)? Advance Auto Parts usually has an alternator for around $130. You'll have to take your old one in though, or else you'll have a core charge added on. You can return it later and get the refund if you need to. Their usually not too hard if its on the top of the engine. I've got a 1994 4.0L and its not that difficult. You can usually do it with just a couple of hand tools.

Be sure to check out the warranty on the alternator. Those $49 dollar one usually only have a warranty for about a year, which they tend to only last that long. The Advance alternators have a lifetime warranty. Also, they'll price match anywhere else with a lifetime warranty. Check out their website for more information about how to install it.

I don't think that I'd attempt it because of the electronics in cars these days. If you're mechanically challenged, don't even attempt it. If you have a friend who does know how to deal with car electronics and knows what they're doing, go ahead. If you take the car to a mechanic, plan on spending between $200 - $400, depending on mechanic and price of alternator (new or used alternator? How much does mechanic charge for labor per hour?).How hard is changing an alternator on a %26039;97 Ford Ranger?
Usually your local auto shop will have the alternator you are looking for and calling around to 3 or more shops will find you the best price. YOu will likely have to return the old alternator for a 'core return' which means, they give you money back for the old one, usually barely worth the trip back.

If this is a vehicle you plan on keeping for a bit, I would pickup a CHILTON book on it. It will show you , pretty much, how to replace the alternator.

But basically, once you locate the alternator, you will have to unbolt it from the engine and replace it with the new one, and plug her in. Keep in mind however that belts that go around the alternator, on many vehichles also go around other items on the vehichle like the fan, air conditioner etc. If you do not pull this tight enough, you will get SQUEELING. If you pull it too tight you are liable to break the belt in a few weeks.

Inspect the belt to make sure it is not worn too bad and that you do not have to replace this also. I would suggest this.

THis is probably one of the easiest things a mechanic can do to a car honestly, that the average guy chooses not to do.

All told I could do it in an hour but have been working on cars for a few years, usually because something breaks.

I learned just like you, by just doing it.

Sometimes you have to remove 'other stuff' to get to the stuff you need to fix. Be sure to document (write down) what bolts etc go where. Make drawings if it helps you.

The easiest way to make sure the belt is tight enough, is to see that there is an adjustment you can use on the alternator that allows you to pull the slack out from the belt and then tighten the alternator down with a bolt or two, usually on some sort of slider. You'll know what I mean when you see it. Just pull it as tight as you can, and then tighten the bolt down. Don't try to SUPER pull the alternator tight, just enough muscle that you are straining yourself. If you are a weakling, then pull tight, if you are a big guy that is actually strong - then be gentle. I told one guy this and he said it was dead on: Pull the alternator hard enough away from the pulleys and belts, tightening the belts hard enough that if you suddenly let go and hit yourself in the stomach, you would definetely feel it and not like it. :)

Btw get the chilton book...go on ebay. Usually about $25 bucks. How hard is changing an alternator on a %26039;97 Ford Ranger?
nope .You are mechanically challenge. if You, by a remote coincidence, install the alternator .You will not be able to install the belt.

    READ PRECAUTION FIRST

To prevent damage to the on-board computer, alternator, and regulator, the following precautions must be taken when working with the electrical system.

If the battery is removed for any reason, make sure it is reconnected with the correct polarity. Reversing the battery connections may result in damage to the one-way rectifiers. Always check the battery polarity visually. This is to be done before any connections are made to be sure that all of the connections correspond to the battery ground polarity.

When utilizing a booster battery as a starting aid, always connect the positive-to-positive terminals and the negative terminals from the booster battery to a good engine ground on the vehicle being started.

Never use a fast charger as a booster to start vehicles.

Disconnect the battery cables when charging the battery with a fast charger; the charger has a tendency to force current through the diodes in the opposite direction for which they were designed. This burns out the diodes.

Make sure the ignition switch if OFF when connecting or disconnecting any electrical component, especially on cars with any on-board computer system.

Never attempt to polarize the alternator.

Do not use test lights of more than 12 volts when checking diode continuity.

Do not short across or ground any of the alternator terminals.

The polarity of the battery, alternator and regulator must be matched and considered before making any electrical connections within the system.

Never separate the alternator on an open circuit. Make sure all connections within the circuit are clean and tight.

Disconnect the battery ground terminal when performing any service on electrical components.

Disconnect the battery if arc welding is to be done on the vehicle.

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the serpentine belt, as outlined in Routine Maintenance of this repair guide.

    Unfasten the alternator retaining bolts.

Detach the electrical connector from the alternator.

Unfasten the nut and the positive battery lead from the alternator output (BAT) terminal.

Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

If removing, unfasten the brace-to-engine bolt.

Fig. 16: Alternator and brace mounting-1996 3.8L engine shown

    To install:

If removed, fasten the brace-to-engine bolt.

Position the alternator in the vehicle.

Attach the battery positive lead and nut to the alternator output terminal. Tighten the nut to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

Attach the electrical connector to the alternator.

Make sure that tightening the bolts does not bind the alternator.

Install the alternator mounting bolts and tighten them to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

Install the serpentine belt, as outlined in Routine Maintenance of this repair guide.

    Connect the negative battery cable.

How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?

I am trying to change my alternator but I cant figure out how to loosen the belt. How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
There is a tensioner. It looks like an arm with a smooth pulley on it that does not look to serve any purpose. Put a wrench on the nut on the tensioner and push to the right it is basically a big spring.

Good luckHow to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
there is a belt tensioner all you need to do is rent the serpentine belt tool its a long rod and you can have it on an angle to loosen it up enough and have someone take the belt off or just stick a 3/8 rachet down there to listen it up and it should be easy enough to lift up and take it offHow to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
Every car has a tensioner. Look at all the pulleys on the belt it should be a smaller one with hole in the middle. If you take a 3/8 inch ratchet it should fit in that hole. You push that down with a lot of pressure and you'll see the belt loosen on the rest of the pulleys. Sometimes it takes two people as you have to push down really hard for some cars and while you push down the other person has to slide the belt off the pulleys. Good luck

Disconnect your battery first, remove you drive belt, remove your tension blot and retaing bolt and slide the alternator out. If you are able to, I'd recommend running to the store to get a manual so you will also have the belt routing available if you forget. It's not difficult, but take your time.
