How do you properly change out the alternator belt on a 1996 Toyota T100?

If anyone has a diagram of exactly what bolts are needed to loosen to change this belt out, it would be much appreciated. Unfortunately, I have to take out all the belts to change this belt, but I don't want to mess it up.How do you properly change out the alternator belt on a 1996 Toyota T100?

Does any one know how to replace the alternator on a 1993 Camry V6?

I'm looking for some help on replacing the alternator on my 1993 Camry. It's a V6, if that makes a difference. I never changed an alternator this is new to me. I really don't feel like caughing up all that money to my mechanic when I can change it myself (and learn something new). I pretty much understand that its a bolt on piece. But how do I get the belt off and on? Do I have to put it back in a certain way? I'd appreciate any help anyone may have. Especially detailed step by step directions. How to replace alternator on 96 Saturn SC1?

I have heard that Saturn SCs are a headache to change the alternator on. I saw some instructions involving taking off the wheel and a bunch of other stuff, and having to get under the vehicle and all. I can't afford what these auto shops are quoting me, so I have no other choice but to do it myself. Does anyone have an actual manual for these cars, have done this before themselves, or have any other advice? How to replace alternator on 96 Saturn SC1?
IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS THEN I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU DON'T.

IT IS VERY DIFFICULT AND YOU NEED A LIFT TO DO IT CORRECTLY, YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE THE TIRE, INNER SHIELD, REMOVE THE FUSE-ABLE LINK FROM THE ALTERNATOR TO THE BATTERY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, REMOVER THE ALTERNATOR SHIELD AND DRIVE BELT THEN REMOVE THE ALTERNATOR ASSEMBLY.

ALSO IF YOU DO TRY THIS YOURSELF I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU GET AN EXTRA FUSE-ABLE LINK BECAUSE YOU WILL LIKELY BLOW IT WHEN YOU GO BACK.How to replace alternator on 96 Saturn SC1?
Is it difficult and a mechanic will charge about $300. The alternator is removed from under the car so you need a jack and jack stands to safely keep the car elevated. since you are working with an electrical circuit you will need to disconnect the battery. Then if you must do your-self get a book from a auto parts store or check your local library reference books. are you sure it is the alternator? You can have tested for free at Auto Zone or a Kragen etc.

The tensioner is a spring loaded pulley you have to use a tensioning tool or long breaker bar to take tension off belt, remove from alternator pulley to change alternator. You will be able to pull tensioner pulley off belt and feel more resistance as you release tension from belt. Be careful when releasing tension so you don't jam your fingers between tool and engine brackets. On a 1993 grand am,need to change the alternator. do i have to loosen the teshin up to loosen the belt?
there should be a bolt or a spot for a 1\2%26quot; breaker bar on the end, just pull until the tension is off the belt.On a 1993 grand am,need to change the alternator. do i have to loosen the teshin up to loosen the belt?
oh yeah, absolutly. That is the only way to take that belt off unless you cut it off, and then you will have to loosen it t put it back on any way. Im not sure if that car has an auto tensioner or not. If not Then you will have to loosen the bolts and pry it so you can loosen the belt. And before you do anything disconnect the battery!!!! Good luck to you.

You'll need metric box wrenches (interlink 2 box wrenches for more leverage) to get into the tight spaces. A breaker bar for some of the really tight bolts and a torque wrench to bolt everything back to specification.

You'll need to jack the front part of your car, disconnect the battery and wire harnesses, remove the adjust bolt and other bolts from the alternator mount, then slide the old alternator out from underneath.

How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?

I want to buy a 1997 BMW 318i but I am a home mechanic and have no trouble working on my Ford's or GM's. I am wondering what the difference is and if i could work on my own BMW. I don't want to do any major motor work just the basics. Example: Starter, Oil changes, Alternator, Tune up. What are some of the differences or obsticals i can come to expect. Is it an easy transition? How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
there really isn't much difference in things like this ,the BMW may cost you less ,because parts seem to last longer on them, oil changes aren't any more, lube jobs aren't either, for the most part of it one wont cost much more than a regular car, prices of parts are high right now for any car made, these just cost a little more that's all,but they also last a lot longer,so in the long run you may come out cheaper,a lot of people have, those are good cars, but like any other car made they do need maintenance work once in a while,it wont break you up though, good luck with it.How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
no, BMW's are a major pain and expensive. You need a lot of specific knowledge and tools to do even the most basic of repairs. They are not at all user friendly and very expensive to replace any parts. That old a car even in good shape in a money drain. BEWARE!!!!How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
The biggest thing I see is price, it's a BMW parts are more expensive regardless if you can get shop price.

Some things are easier than others because of setup. The BMW is a lil more cramed area to work with, kinda like a ford to a honda, amount of space to work with.

I believe the BMW is more computer controlled compared to the domestics and the tools needed, you might need a couple of the specialty tools for that particular vehicle.

That's really about it, you will just have to open the hood and see, it shouldn't be a hard transition, but get the shop manual if you can, I believe if you know how to use torrents you will be able to find it no problem. How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
all i can tell you is that compared to your other cars the BMW parts will be damn expensive ya know gotta send the parts from Germany other than that i don't really think there is much of a difference

How can I maintain my alternator?

I am having to have my alternator changed for the second time in a year. It's a Saturn 2001 SL1 sedan. The first time it died while I was on the road. At least this time I caught it going out before my car stopped in the road. Could it be something I'm doing, though? I know almost nothing about cars and the shops don't explain things well. I thought maybe I'm not maintaining something correctly or mis-using something and that is why this has happened. How can I maintain my alternator?
There really isn't any maintenance that is done on an alternator. They do eventually wear out.

However, the majority of alternators usually come with a minimum of a 1 year warranty. (Check the warranty that the mechanic should have given you when you first had it replaced) If it has been under a year, your mechanic should replace the alternator at the cost of his labor.

I recommend purchasing an alternator from a parts store like Autozone, they typically have many levels of warranties they sell with an alternator. I recommend getting the life time warranty alternator. If the alternator ever breaks down again, all you have to do is take in the old alternator and they will give you a new one at no additional cost. (You'll just pay for installation if you don't do it yourself) The lifetime warrantied alternators also seem to be better built/reconditioned than those with only a 1 year warranty. How can I maintain my alternator?
There really isnt any maintence to do for an alternator. Just sounds like some bad luck. I just changed one in my mothers car, the new one lasted about 2 weeks then went again, just bad luck. How can I maintain my alternator?
It was probably made in China.

Other than adjusting belt tension there isn't much you can do. You can find shops that will rebuild them, and if you do have proper tools you can buy kits to rebuild them yourself. How can I maintain my alternator?
alternators do not require any %26quot;maintenance.%26quot; but most of them do come with warranties so since yours failed within a year i would say that it should be replaced under some kinda warranty.

just make sure to buy a quality replacement, and get your warranty in writing. How can I maintain my alternator?
Other than making sure all plugs are plugged in, and all wires are tight, there is no maintenance that gets done to an alternator, it either works or it doesn't. Do check to see if there was a warranty on the first one though, it may save you a little money. Yes, I've installed brand new ones and had them fail. It happens. How can I maintain my alternator?
could be another underlying problem there are relay switches that should shut the power off to you alternator when you fully charged.Your alternator probably isnt sutting down like it should causing it to burn out have a diagnostic test done this will tell you the exact problemHow can I maintain my alternator?
There is really no one way to maintain an alternator.

What you should do though, is test the alternator that is supposedly bad to make sure that it really is a bad alternator and not some other problem, such as a bad connection. Also get an original equipment alternator and have it put on by a good technician. How can I maintain my alternator?
i shall impart my wisdom to you...rebuilt starters and alternators are CRAP.... the price is 1/3 to 1/2 off for a reason.....and rebuilt is different from remanufactured...rebuilt replaces worn out pts where as remanufactured does most parts....most use foreign [china] parts even if they are rebuilt here in the USA.. when installing Dont over tighten the belt...it can wear the bearings in the alt...make sure battery ahd wires are tight and clean..How can I maintain my alternator?
Alternators do not require maintenance. Try this next time you are in your car when it is dark outside. Start you car and see if your lights in and outside dim. Also if your radio is not that loud. Your battery might be your problem. Are there corrosion on the post, are your cables lose. Also your belt could be lose.

This has happened to me before and friends. I we have bought parts before and put them on and they were bad.

Boy this is weird, I just did one of these on an Infinity I30 yesterday, same engine and similar body.

Remove the cooling fan + shroud assy.

Loosen the idler pulley and remove the alternator belt.

Remove the right undercover, (the alternator is going to come out from the bottom).

    Remove the right side cover.

Remove the 4 AC compressor bolts so you can slide it forward.

Remove the large battery feed wire.

    Remove the upper alternator bolt.

Lean the alternator toward the radiator and remove the other alternator plug on top.

It may take some prying to get the lower part of the alternator off the bracket.

You are going to move the AC compressor toward the radiator and toward your right and the alternator will come out the side. It will be tight but it will come out. The bottom radiator hose will be a little in the way but it can stay on. It's a small pain in the butt. :)

*** Upon reassembly plug the alternator connector in first, you can put the lower bolt in to hold it up then lean the alternator outward to do this. It's almost impossible to do it after the top alternator bolt is in.How do i change a alternator?

Thanks Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!How do I change the alternator for a 1990 Toyota Celica GT 2.2L?
A fairly easy repair for a novice. Disconnect the battery cables before you start. Alternator is on your left looking from the front of the car. Driven by the serpentine belt. You need to disconnect the power cable and control harness first. Power cable is on the front. One big brass nut under a plastic cover. The other harness is on the back of the alternator(right hand side, the side away from the pulley) It has a plastic housing you squeeze to disengage and pull. The unit is only held on by two bolts. One on top that is used for adjusting the tension on the belt. It is bolted through a slotted bracket to allow for adjustment. The other one is directly under the pulley on the alternator. This is a long one which the alternator pivots on. You may not be able to see it but if you reach just under the pulley you can feel it. Disconnect the wires, loosen both bolts and remove the belt, finish removing the bolts and yank that baby out.

there are different types of pulley setups on different vehicles. there could be the tensioner pulley setup, as stated in the previous post, but it could also be the older setup. if you buy a haynes manual (or clyner, whichever, i prefer haynes) it will have the pictures showing you exactly what to do, step by step. manuals typically cost less than $20. it is not complicated by any means if youre a fairly intelligent individual with any mechanical sense at all.

Remove the alternator restraint bracket screws. Next, using a 15mm(I'm not quite sure if that's right) wrench turn the tensioner bolt located on the left side of the engine block. Turn just enough to push back and down. The tensioner should move loosening the belt and freeing the tension from the alternator.

Then, remove all of the screws securing the alternator. Disconnect the electric ground cable from the rear of the alternator. Remove the alternator. Installing the new one is just in reverse.

Charged battery. The battery needle is not moving. Someone said check voltage regulator. Does 1992 have one or is it in alternator? Is belt too tight? How to loosen? Any help?Changed the alternator on my 1992 jeep wrangler and battery still not charging. Changed alternator again. HELP
Every Wrangler 91 and newer the voltage regulator is built into the ECM, the computer has complete control over the alternator.

Here is a bit I wrote for a Jeep board on testing the newer style alternators:

    --------------------------------------?br>

Don檛 pull the cable off the positive terminal on the battery, this is a bad habit. Alternators need power to create power, so if you remove the power it is possible for an alternator stop charging, and hence the vehicle will die, yet the alternator can still be good. Also pulling the positive cable and replacing it creates weird spikes in the electrical system, which can fry things like your ECM.

With the Jeep running, your voltage should be between 14-14.9 volts. 13.0-15.0 volts is acceptable, but it should be 14 something. If it is 14 volts it檚 a pretty good indication the alternator is fine. Every now and then I檝e come across an alternator that puts out 14 volts, but little to no amps. 14 volts @ 1 amp isn檛 enough power to charge anything, but this isn檛 real common.

If you don檛 have 14 volts, you need to check a few other things. Most all alternators have a wire harness going to them. One of these wires is for the field voltage, if you don檛 get power to the field, your alternator won檛 charge. On newer YJs and all TJs, the voltage regulator is controlled by the ECM. On these alternators there are two wires on the back, one constantly cycles between 10-12 volts to control the alternators output, while the other is a reference wire to tell the ECM how much power the alternator is putting out. On CJs and early YJs the voltage regulator is built into the alternator, so the field wire, will have a constant 12 volts. If you have power to the field, but aren檛 getting 14 volts, it檚 a pretty safe bet your alternator is bad.

If your alternator is putting out 16+ volts, stop driving the Jeep. Either your voltage regulator is bad, or (on newer Jeeps with the ECM controlled alternators) your battery could be bad. I檝e come across several newer Jeeps where the ECM will try and over compensate for a bad battery by boosting alternator output. Last WJ I worked on that did this was spiking to 22 volts!

If all else fails, check with your local autoparts store, almost all of them can test your alternator both on and off the Jeep.

    --------------------------------------?br>

You're gonna need a multi-meter for this one, if you aren't familiar with them, check out my writeup here:

Never fear, the wannabe mechanic is here. or something like that.

OK, grasshopper. When you put in new alternator your battery is supposed to be fully charged or you may burn the new alternator out.

Now if your battery has a weak cell, it may take a charge but then only hold it for an hour or not charge up at all. Apparently with a new alternator you need to get the battery checked out.

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

If you move the belt it should move I think about a 1/2 inch more or less. Also clean the battery posts. If they are dirty this may prevent the battery from charging. Go to the Dollar Store and they have some battery post cleaner brush there for a buck. Just as good as the $5 one at the parts store.

So when you charged the battery did you get it checked out by the auto parts place. If your battery is good, posts clean, alternator new, then you have to check the cables on your starter which may be loose or broken. They are part of the circuit. But get the manual and it will tell you exactly what to do. May the Force be with you.

Go to Auto Zone or other parts store that will check out your vehicle for free. Call first though as only selected stores do this. Light may be from a jillion things from oxygen sensor bad to low oil pressure but something.

if its typical there will be a pivot bolt opposite the pinch bolt which held the adjustment locked. the pivot bolt may be in one or 2 pieces. There are at least 2 wires on it, an heavy wire and a light one-disconnect battery earth before removing the wires from the alternator. If the heavy wire has a nut over it, be careful when you undo it that what's underneath doesn't undo also. disconnect wiring. remove pivot(s) remove alt via the easiest route, up or down. Install is reverse. when refitted, replace charge bulb in dash. A faulty bulb can prevent charging, so a new one is cheap insurance. Changing Alternator in 1998 Chevy Malibu LS?

Typically with Ford trucks the older they get the easier they are to work on...sometimes.

The engine compartments tend to have more room, but stuff starts getting a bit rusty and hard to break loose when they are that old. I'd suggest having a can of penetrating lubricant to use on the bolts, and make sure you bring a breaker bar to use on those hard to break-loose bolts.

You don't take off the boots. You remove the half axle with boots and CV joints attached. I replaced the axles on mine last year. It involves removing the wheel then the large nut that holds the hub on [sometimes difficult]. Detaching the lower ball joint [can also be difficult for the novice or beginner]. Taking out the lower bolt that attaches the fork. Pry the axle out at the transaxle with a pry bar and remove it. Then you should be able to get the alternator out.

Wow, how old are you that they didn't have starters when you were in your 20's? LOL

Seriously though, if it wouldn't crank over with a new battery, you don't need an alternator. Check both your battery cables at both ends. Or, if it's not making any noise at all, make sure you're getting power to your starter solenoid when you turn the ignition key to %26quot;start%26quot;. If you need a starter, remove negative cable from battery, remove wires from starter, remove starter from engine. Reverse to install. Most auto parts stores will test your starter for free if you bring it in (bench test), to be sure that's it.How to change an alternator, or starter?

    91 Toyota Pickup Alternator changing?

I need a how to on changing alternator on a 91 Toyota Pickup with 22-RE engine. Anyone point me in the direction with a link?91 Toyota Pickup Alternator changing?
Well the first thing you do is take the negative battery cable of the battery. Then locate the alternator. First you have to remove the belt on the alternator. There is some systems that are different. You probally have to lossen the alternator on the car to remove the belt. After the belt if off remove the bottom bolt on the alternator. Then find the top alternator bolt. Then the alternator should come loose. You then remove the plug in for the wiring on the alternator. You also need to remove the ground on the back side of the alternator. YOu are done. Reverse steps to put new one on. Hope that helps91 Toyota Pickup Alternator changing?
disconnect the battary losen the alt belt the the bolts out of the alt and the wires going to the back of it91 Toyota Pickup Alternator changing?
unless it is something out fo the ordinary, most alternators are held on by two or three bolts. in fact most of them are 14mm bolts! just unplug battery first, unplug the alternator and you might have one wire attached with a nut to take off, and take out bolts. to reattach just do the reversal. be sure to check your belt tension before you remove the old one. if it is good, aim for the same tension with your new one.

How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?

Can't afford to take it in to a shop.. Thanks. How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?
Take the old one off...bolt on the new one, reattach the belt...

It's on of the easiest parts to change.

The guy below is right about the belt tensioner. It's a bolt your turn that moves and loosens it. Do this with a friend, it takes some muscle.

I say this because if you do it with one hand on the wrench and one to grab the belt, it can slip and you can smash yourself in the face with the wrench. There's tension from a spring to keep the belt tight, and that same spring is what you need to compress to loosen the belt.

There's usually a little picture of belt inside your hood. PAY ATTENTION to how it goes on though, it has to be weaved through the right way or your car won't work. How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?

On a 1984 buick skyhawk, about one hour or less. Most alternators mount the same way in different orders from top to bottom, the skyhawks was on top to keep it dry.Usually, you simply loosen the mounting bolts (one pivots, one or two others keep the tension on the belt). Then undo the electrical connections(Do not let them touch and label them to make sure you don't blow the electrical system).Work carefully and thouroly as it is difficult to undo things in tight quarters.Make sure to use jack stands if working underneath, dropping a car on your head will kill you.A rebuilt alternator will cost $50-150 depending on complexity.Make sure it goes back together as it was before, any exposed electrical can start fires.

wow, about the easiest alt in the world. you need a 14mm, a 12mm and a 10mm and a mechanical mind. thats bout it. Just remember to disconnect your battery before you decided to jump into this..... somehow Im worried about this situation. (IM NOT RESPONSIBLE WHEN YOU SHORT OUT YOUR CAR ;) )92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?
You'll need a set of metric sockets and/or combination wrenches. It's not all that terribly difficult. The hard part will be getting the belt reinstalled; that may take some extra work. When you get the new alternator, check to see that it is the same as the one you're replacing, then make note of where it is located on the engine. Loosen the bolts, (disconnect the wires first), then slide the old alternator toward the engine. Remove the bolts and remove the alternator from the bracket. To install the new one, simply reverse the process. It's not rocket science, but it does take some work and thought before attempting the job. Good luck!92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?
it shouldn't be too hard. i suggest taking some digital pictures before you take it apart. if you can't do that make notes of where wires and bolts are connected. i like to make a list of everything i do and every part i take off. when i put it back together i start at the bottom of the list and work back to the top checking things off.

I have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?

i have 1989 saab ems, when the charge light is on,the car sudden stoped,RACV people said it was alternator fault,,later i changed alternator,it was second hand one from volvesaab parts, when i put replacement ,i start the car,the charge light is still on,i checked battery, it i was not charged, can anyone who is expert on the saab tell me what else could be wrong? i checked alternator drive belt,i think it is correctly tensioned.

so if the replacement of alternator is also deflective, how can i check whether is alternator problem or voltage regulator problem, because i have three month warrant .so i have to make sure it is alternator problemI have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?
Look at the alternator for a wiring connection marked field,or f1.Check it with a test light or volt meter to be sure it is energized when the ignition is turned on.If it isn't,there may be a fault with the circuit and it may be fused. If it checks out,the next suspect is the regulator which should be checked for poor connections or replaced. You can find out if the charging system is working by briefly disconnecting the battery with the engine running. If it continues to run,the system is OK,if it dies, the charge system is dead.I have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?
well to check your alternator the first thing you can do is get yourself a mutimeter ( they are around 10 bucks from a electronic store) then while the car is running switch the mutimeter gauge to Volts then connect the positive(red) lead to the positive on the alternator (there should be a + sign) and the

black lead on the mulitimeter to the body of the alterantor to get a good ground.

if the meter reads over 13.1 volts then the alternator is good if not then the magnets inside the alternator may be worn down or the alternator coil may be broken.

its sounds to me as though you may have a charging system problem, if the battery is good then there could be an open in the charge system somewhere, auto electrics are best for finding faults like this since they have all the equipment at hand...goodluckI have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?
On some designs the voltage regulator is built into the alternator, and on others it is a separate module, often mounted somewhere on the inside fender well. A bad voltage regulator could cause your problem, as could a dead short.

Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?

I'm at work and my 1998 Rav4's alternator belt just snapped when i got back from lunch. I purchased the belt already but I'm not quite sure how to replace it. I was told there is a Tensioner pulley somewhere that I can turn to release some tension but I'm not sure which one it is. If you have a how-to or diagram or any information please help. ThanksDoes anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?
Theyre not hard to replace but you are going to need a wrench to retract the belt tensioner. There is a diagram usually under your hood for the belt route. but the tensioner pulls back off the the belt so there is slack on the belt so you can pull out the old one and slip in the new one being sure to follow the same route as the old one. The only problem is your going to have to get yourself a wrench to do this.

    heres a pic of one

http://www.amazon.com/Summit-SUM-900035-Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?
It requires a serpentine belt tool. first take note of the routing of the belt, raise the car up and remove the shield covering the crank pulley, put a 19mm socket on the tool, find the tensioner toward the top of the engine, put the tool on the fixed tensioner casting (its a 19mm hex cast right into the tensioner) (do this from the bottom) and pull down. this will take the tension off the belt and allow you to slip the belt off the waterpump pulley. let the bar go back up and the whole belt will fall off. replacing is reverse, its tricky the first time......even the second or third. good luck! oh and dont try to drive it to the repair shop if you cant get it back on.....the waterpump wont be working so you'll risk engine damage by overheating, the power steering wont work, the battery wont charge, and as if it matters...the A/C wont work either!

BMW cars do NOT cost any more than other cars to own, REALLY. Wear items like belts, brake pads, and rotors are very cheap in comparison and will outlast other similar parts from other car-makers, generally. Your problem will always be finding someone who charges a decent repair wage for labor. Labor is nearly ALWAYS more. THere should be a map of belt routing under your hood or in your owner's manual. GOOD LUCK!! IT should be easy!!How do you change a bmw alternator belt?

How to change the alternator on a '96 Nissan Maxima?

I have a bad alternator does anyone have a diagram on how to remove it or can I get step by step instructions? How to change the alternator on a %26039;96 Nissan Maxima?
the alternator is usually held on by a couple of bolts. All cars are different, so all I can give is a general idea of the steps involved. To get detailed instructions, you need the service manual.

The first thing you should do is disconnect the battery

Then, follow the instructions for loosening and removing the belt from the alternator.

Unplug or unscrew all connections to the alternator

Remove bolts securing the alternator to the motor.

Remove the alternator and replace following the instructions in reverse.

Looking at pictures of the motor, it looks like the easiest way to get to the alternator is from under the car. It looks to be on the passenger side near the front of the car

How do i change the alternator on a fiat punto 1.2?

My Fiat Punto 1.2 didn't start one morning, someone looked at it and said its the battery.I changed it and it worked for few days and then it died again. The only logical solution is to change the alternator but i don't want to go to a mechanic because i'm already short on cash. Can someone please explain how i can change it myself? How do i change the alternator on a fiat punto 1.2?
On the 1.2 Punto engine, the alternator is located at the rear of the engine, furthest from the gearbox. The alternator pivots on one mounting and has a second mounting which tightens to tension the belt. Access is easier with the roadwheel and wheelarch liner removed (simply screwed in.) Disconnect the battery and slacken all the mounting bolts for the alternator. This will loosen the belt so it can be removed. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the rear of the alternator and then remove the alternator all together. Replacement is the reverse of fitting, but i would recommend a new belt at the same time - if the old belt snaps, it can rip off the cambelt aswell which is not good news! To tension the belt, use a pry bar to push the alternator away from the engine and tighten the belt. Hold this tension as you tighten up the top mounting nut which will then keep the tension. How do i change the alternator on a fiat punto 1.2?
disconect the battery but before you do make sure you have the radio code, remove the wire`s attatched to the alt/unit take the bolts off that secure the altinator, refit in reverse order.

the engine is a V6, i just need to know how to change it without takeing the whole engine apart. How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?
it should be pretty easy on the car, the motor is either a 3.1ltr or the 3800 and the alt should be on top and in the middle. Take the neg bat cable off and then take a three eights drive ratchet and turn back the belt tension er and undo the belt and then undo the plug to the alt and then take out the two bolts and presto new back in same order but reversed. How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?
your engine will be a 3100, changing the alternator is a little hard

to do the first time but here goes. most belt tensioners take a 15mm wrench to take the tension off the belt. it will be hard to remove the tension without a special or long end wrench but it can be done. then remove the belt from the alternator, there is a large red wire attached to the alternator and 2 or 3 smaller wires the plug into it. you might have to have a %26quot;back up%26quot; wrench to remove the nut on the red wire, they often turn inside and ruin the alternator. there are 2 bolts that hold the alternator in its brackets

and a smaller bracket on the back side with a bolt in the alternator and a nut onto the top of the motor. it is a 15 minute job if you have the tools and have done it before. How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?
disconnect the shiz and connect the shiz man.How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?
You may need a special wrench designed for releasing the tensioner assembly so you can remove the belt. Once you accomplish this, it's pretty straight forward. First, disconnect the battery! Proceed with the belt, and move on. Two or three bolts, depending upon the design of the bracket, and the whole thing will lift right out. Take it with you when you purchase the new one. There are 4, yes 4 different locations for the wiring connections. This is known as %26quot;clocking%26quot;. It is much easier to get the correct one the first time, but, if you need your ride right away, and your local auto parts store doesn't have the proper one, you can do this yourself. If you have an impast wrench, spin the pulley loose. Don't remove it yet! Turn it up, nose down, on a table or workbench. You need to take the three bolts loose that keep the housing together. Do NOT, under ANY circumstances lift the alternator up from now on. If you do, no sweat, but this isn't alternator rebuild 101. With the nose of the alternator on the table, take the three bolts out. Tap on the front portion of the housing and it will drop down. Spin it so that the mounting holes and the harness connections are in the correct location and re-install the three bolts. You will have to tighten them in sequence otherwise it may cause the armature to bind. I've done thousands of them. It will take you about 15 minutes to clock it if you have to.

It has a full lifetime warranty, so I don't want to take it to a shop. How do I change the Alternator for my 1997 Dodge Neon?
It's easiest on a hoist but if you can't get to one, jack up the right front and turn wheel all the way to the left.

    -disconnect negative cable from battery

    -remove right wheel

    -remove splash guard

-on top of alternator there is a belt tension adjusting nut, you'll have to loosen the tension on the belt ( this is the hardest part due to the lack of space ) in order to remove the belt

-there is a bracket that holds the alternator ( held by 2 or 3 bolts ), this has to be removed

-with bracket gone, the alternator can come out but the space is very tight...you may have to turn the alternator at different angles to be able to squeeze it past the wheel well area

How do I know if I need to change the alternator, alternator belt, battery or all of the above?

I have a 1990 Toyota Camry that runs fine but doesn't like to get started. It turns right on when you jump it and before that the lights work fine. So I don't think it's the battery. How do I know if it's the alternator or just the belt? Appreciate any help. How do I know if I need to change the alternator, alternator belt, battery or all of the above?
Take a multitester and measure battery voltage it should read 12 volts. Then start the car and measure voltage at the battery again. It should be ideally 14.4 volts but 14 range is good. If the voltage on the battery is drastically under 12 volts the suspect is the battery. if it is under 14 then it is likely the alternator or the voltage regulator, or even a loose alternator belt as stated. If you do not have a multitester you can go to a checker shucks cragan and have them check the battery and alternator, they will test them for free. Another thing to check is for your battery cables and terminals to be in good shape tight and clean. i hope this helps.....How do I know if I need to change the alternator, alternator belt, battery or all of the above?
Auto zone will test your alternator and battery for free ( perk of their biz to bring in customers ) If it runs fine when its already started then the alternator is working, if it doesnt hold a charge or has a hard time turning over and starting then its the battery. the belt wont affect any of these unless if it was off but you can look at it and see if its worn ( any fread edges or missing peices) How do I know if I need to change the alternator, alternator belt, battery or all of the above?
If you are saying that if you jump it it will starts right up, then one of two things are bad.....battery or starter. If the battery is up to power then I would start looking at the starter. If the battery can't hold a load the look at the alternator or battery. Good Luck. How do I know if I need to change the alternator, alternator belt, battery or all of the above?

Will I need to remove the fan belt to get the alternator belt on? Any advice would be really helpful. How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?
I get a kick out of these kids who think that every vehicle ever made has one single Serpentine belt. They probably couldn't adjust a set of points if they were stranded in the Yukon and their life depended on it.

You will need to remove any belts that are mounted in front of the Alternator belt. As far as the Alternator, those are easy. There are 2 bolts holding it in, one short one, and one long one, The long one is the one the Alternator pivots on. The short one keeps it from pivoting by locking it in place, although both should be tightened when you are done. Just loosen both, and push the Alternator towards the engine.

You probably have at least a Power Steering belt in front, and usually if you have Air Conditioning, that will be in the back on yours, if I remember correctly. Either of those are usually a little more complicated, as they have more than 2 bolts you have to loosen. The Power Steering has one on the back (a nut actually) that a lot of people don't notice.

    Here are some pictures that might help;

    http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/m

    http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/m

Notice that the Power Steering has 3 bolts right in front of the pump, but those hold the pump to the bracket, so leave those alone. You want to loosen the 2 nuts/bolts towards the engine side, that hold the bracket to the engine, and the one in back, and move the pump and front bracket at the same time. The back bracket doesn't move like the front one does.

To get the belt off all the way, you will have to get it over the fan, which is easiest if you start on one side of the fan, and work your way towards the other side of the fan, one blade at a time. Put the new belts back over the fan the same way, except in reverse.

Once you get all the belts in place and on the pulleys, you need to move the device back away from the engine to tighten the belt. Be careful with the Power Steering especially, when using a pry bar, as the outside is the fluid reservoir. That bends easily, and can cause a leak if you do bend it.

Once you get the belt tight enough, tighten one of the lockdown bolts, which are mounted over a slot. Then tighten the rest, including the pivot bolts. Start the engine up, making sure that no one else is standing by the front of the car, and make sure they're still on and tight after you shut the engine off.How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?
You don't need to loosen anything. There should be a drawing of the belt route on the fan shrout. It should have picture of where the belt go. All you need is 3/4%26quot; socket and a long breaker bar.

    1. You route all the belt to all the parts it is suppose to, power steering, a/c, alternator, main pulley, smog pump and of course the tensioner is last.

    2. You stick the socket on the tensioner bolt and pull onto it while placing the belt over the tensioner.

Once the belt is on the tensioner, you are done! Making sure the belt go onto the other part properly. You can then start the engine. How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?
you only need a new belt tensioner if the old one has no tension on it or it vibrates too much when the engine is running, you will need either a 3/8 or 1/2 breaker bar, the tensioner arm will have a square hole to place the bar socket into, use the bar as a lever to slide the new belt in.

V6, Alternator is on back side of passenger side of engine. Remove negative battery cable, Release belt tension at automatic tensioner. Remove upper metal bracket over alternator. this bracket will have 2, 8 mm bolts into alternator. after bracket removed one lower bolt goes through alternator. this bold has a nut on the back side and is difficult to get out. But it can be done. Someone put it in there. you can get it out. After bolt is removed you can rotate the alternator to gain access to electrical connectors.

It is probably on the passenger side of the car near the bottom. Only thing you should be aware of is that there will probably be little room to work to replace it. Might be easiest to get at it from under the car.

It would be best to have the Battery load-tested, check voltage while running, and check over the wiring connections to be sure. It's possible that the Battery is just not holding a charge. If the system voltage is above 13 with the engine running, you probably need a Battery.

If it is the Alternator that's bad, how hard does vary between engines. Here's instructions for your model, and the various engines. There's also a section on testing, but you'd need some electrical testing equipment.

Find the tensioner on the serpentine belt. This will release pressure off of the belt, allowing you to slip it off the alternator. Also, check for the condition of the belt, as it would be a good time to chnage it while it is loose, as belts usually last less than the components that they wrap on. 1. disconnect the negative battery cable [lay a rag over the battery post to prevent accidental arcing.

2 remove serpentine drive belt [make a drawing of belt routing before removal] now remove belt tensioner.

3 remove power steering fluid supply hose from pump [catch fluid from resivour in a pan and dispose of properly][you will need approx a bottel and a half of NEW fluid upon reassembely]

3-a at this point disconnect the top radiator hose from engine and lay aside [about 2 quarts of coolant will be lost]

4 remove the pressure line from the pump and lay aside [cover open end with another rag to prevent dirt entry] now unbolt and remove the pump.

5 note the position of wires on back of alternator [don't remove just yet]

6 the alternator %26quot;nests%26quot; between the a/c compressor and the engine block. so remove the top 2 compressor bolts, then loosen but DO NOT

remove the bottom 2 compressor bolts.

7 now remove the one bolt at the top of the alternator, [this is a little tight to fit hand there]

8 pull alternator towred the fnt. of car and upwards at the same time, all while twisting enough to expose wiring, whitch can now be disconnected.

9 now pull alternator out from the top.

10 while installation is the reverse of above leave the battery feed wire a little loose [the big red wire] until new alternator is securely mounted

then this can be tightened after wire is back in guide groove [don't forget to reinstall the wire cover, it just snaps in place]

11 fill p/s resivour and coolant resivourto mark [leave coolant cap off so pressure wont build up and scald you]. before starting.

let warm at idle until cooling fans come on and recheck the coolant level, adding as necessary then replacing the capHow do you change the alternator in an 01 Volvo V70?
I don't think you can do this yourself.

You are able to take it out, but if you change it, you need software for the new alternator. So the new alternator wouldn't work properly.

Ok , first its not the timing belt... your car has an auxillary belt driven alternator. Its not that difficult to do, just find the belt tensioner, loosen it and that should give you enough slack to pull it out. Beyond that I would suggest going to a parts house and buy a haynes or chilton's manual for your car. These will help you do almost anything you want to do to your car. hope this helps....good luck.

Please add any additional tips a newbie should know for removing/installing alternator %26amp;/or serpentine in 3.0L v6 92 Base model LeBaron. How to change alternator / release serpentine tension on tensioner pulley 92 LeBaron Conv 3.0L V6?
Push the belt in between any two pulleys, while watching with a flashlight. The one that moves when you push the belt in is the tensioner (the rest are stationary). Some tensioners have a hex, a square tab or a square hole that you grab with a socket and ratchet(or breaker bar), a crescent wrench, or a 1/2 inch square drive breaker bar or ratchet handle respectively. Check to make sure there is a pulley diagram before you remove the old belt. If there isn't, draw one because it can be confusing sometimes. Insert the correct tool and pull away from the belt on the circumference of the pulley. Flip the belt off. Then reinstall the new one.How to change alternator / release serpentine tension on tensioner pulley 92 LeBaron Conv 3.0L V6?
your alternator pulley itself might be the tension pulley. take the bolts off the alternator and wiring and put new alternator in. you need a big pry bar and probably another person. hook up the belt and have someone pry on the bar and alternator pulley to put tension on the belt, then at the same time tighten the bolts on your alternator
